Z rated tyres for V8S

Has anybody purchased any standard sized (205/55 or 60/Z15)Z rated tyres recently for a V8S.

I have been ringing around and have been unable to get any bridgestones, and so far have mainly been offered Pirelli or Michelin - neither are my preferred choice?

I have also been offered Toyo - although I do not know how good they are on an 'S'.

Details of what you have purchased and whether you are happy with them would be very useful.

Hi,

Don't know if this helps as these are a long way from you (shops in Leicester, Brum, Manchester)but they really know their stuff. Owners have a SEAC and Ferrari themselves. I'm sure they could give good advice. Last week they had 17in Phantom wheels complete with Cooper Avon tyres for £395.

Morning Larry,

This is going to affect more and more of us as our Bridgestone’s ware out. I bought a pair of Goodyear F1’s when I could not get the Bridgestone SO3’s again. They were supposed to go on the back, but the car felt very bad running tyres with such soft side walls (I am not the only one to say this, search for my previous thread moaning about this). I then switched them to the front which was actually quite a good set up. But, what am I going to do when my last pair of Bridgestone rears ware out.

I have heard that the Toyo have equally soft tyre walls, so I discounted them straight off. Pirelli and Michelin I do not have experience of on the S, but they are not cheap pot luck purchase. I have been recommended Avon by a BMW M5 driver friend of mine, these are at least cheap enough in 205 / 55/ 15 Z. I have just looked and they don’t make them any more.

We are all going to have to buy larger wheels at this rate and I really like mine

Drove with Pirelli P6000 on my S3. They are the tyre of death, like driving on an oil slick with teflon wheels.

Most people I spoke to rated the F1's highly, but I think they are designed for heavier cars than the S.

Have you or any other TVR drivers tried the SP9000's, it would be nice to have a recommendation from first hand experience. Not that we have too many alternatives any more.

If possible it would be nice to have some sort of data base with different tyres and comments by owners on the performance. These forums exist in the net, but I believe the lighter / RWD cars make up very small numbers of test contributions.

Can we have a specific S, or even general TVR tyre rating forum of this kind. Would the S web site, or TVRCC be able to host such a thing, or even PH. Votes, comments, availablity, wet / dry etc.

Anyone else care to comment.

Whats wrong with the RE720's they are W rated IIRC which is more than enough, I find them excellent and havent heard a bad thing about them. Dont get hung up on the Z rating issue, its really not needed. This is my take on things and I know others have a different view, but Bridgestone effectively replaced the RE71 with the RE720 and they are a better tyre than the original fitted so technically they will be fine.

I was happy with Eagle F1 s on my S......

With regard to the Dunlop SP9000's these are what has been recommended to me for my Griff by Steve Guilglami (Guilglami Motor Sport) for mainly road use with the odd track day thrown in..... still to get some though

I think the size of tyre also makes a fair bit of difference,very shortly i'll have 16" wheels on the rear with F1's on.I'll report back once done

no doubt my dad will post later but from his word the F1's on the rear are almost dangerous.... the sidewalls are too soft and it makes it awful for fast corners....

It was pretty bad trying to hold a straight line, fast corners were only for the foolhardy

The only other time I have experienced such things was when i fitted the wheels off of my Mk1 cavalier to rear of my MK2 golf. (Student with a puncture and no money). You can achieve similar effects by deflating your tyres to 5psi, if anyone is interested

It's going to be good to have a bit more feedback from people.

Pies, what profile are you running your 16" rims with, I would expect 50 or below would be a lot better than 55.

45,hence i expect a lot less sidewall flex

IIRC HarryW is running on quite a high spring rate therefore i expect the slightly softer walls on the tyre are doing extra work for him (i.e giving up)

I have heard mix reviews about the F1 tyres, AFAIK they are much better in the wet than most and thats where their advantage lies. As most S series are not used in the wet, I dont thing they are suited, thats what I was told about them by a very knowledgable guy. The same can be said for the Falken GBK451's which are a fantastic tyre and I was thinking of putting them on the V8S, but they are the same, strength in the wet hence not good for the S? I have never heard a bad comment about Bridgstone RE720 Larry I would go with them if sticking to 205/60 tyres!

I have Bridgestone S-03 PP 245/45x16 on the rear and find them excellent, grip is unbelievable, very hard to get the tail out and standing starts no longer are just a load of smoke??? I can actually pull away very quickly?

I had the F1's on my old car and I thought they were ok, I am running some Dunlops SP70(i think) on the new one and am chucking it around a bit with no noticable problems.
I was surprised when Gugi didn't have a moan about them and in fact praised up Dunlop in general, particularly the ones he suggested to Hoover.
Maybe worthy of consideration as I don't think they are heaps of money.

My preference would be Bridgestones, but a number of places I been speaking with cannot source them in the sizes the 'S' needs.

I have just had a look at Blackcircles and they are listing the Dunlop SP9000's (205/55/Z15) at a sensible price and Bridgestone RE71's(205/60/Z15) at a less sensible price. I think I have read on PH that the RE71's haven't been around for a while and these could be older stock?

Does anybody know if the RE720 is still a current tyre?
