Does the oil pump always need priming when you do an oil change or is it only if the pump has been allowed time to drain?

Quite a bit on "how" to do it but I cant seem to find anything on "why".

TIA.

Cheers,

I’ve always part filled the new oil filter whenever I’ve done an oil/filter change on a Rover V8 and never had any issues.

Can you imagine garages fannying around priming oil pumps every time they serviced a Range Rover!

Take the king lead off the coil and spin the engine on the starter motor until some oil pressure registers on the gauge. Job done! thumbup

The oil pump will only drain out over a period of time. Just dong a normal oil change should not be a problem.

There's really no need. For customer cars all you need to do is fire it up and rev the nuts off it until the oil pressure warning lamp goes out. wink
