Goodbye to an old friend - please make new owner welcome
Discussion
I sold my beloved S2 last Sunday, after nearly 26 years in my ownership. Fair to say I am heartbroken - been very down for several days since agreeing the sale last week, and close to tears after waving the buyer off. If you are thinking of selling, don't underestimate the emotional pull which these beautiful cars have on us.
Cheered me up a lot though, when the 75 year old buyer turned up in T-shirt and shorts and set off with the roof down to drive from Blackpool to Inverness - well done that man! If Simon and TVR 89S turn up at the North-East Scotland owners' club, please make them welcome.
Farewell, my love ...
And thanks to everyone here for years of useful info and comradeship.

Did you point the old chap towards the Facebook TVR S Series Group, another source for chat, help and advice?

My thread hijacked, within 2 hours ...* sigh *
I'm really sorry for that. Apologies. But reading every 2 subjects : "Go to FB, PH is dead" exasperates me to the highest degree. PH is not dead, but users don't post to talk st as on FB. On PH, if you read, and if you don't have anything to add, you keep quiet. On PH, if a subject has been solved, 10 years after, you will find the solution, without posting anything. On FB, If a problem has been solved 10 days before, you are not aware, and you ask the same question again and again... and again. Scrump is right. PH is an encyclopaedia, full of quality knowledge. This is, at least, the third time I have to write the same rant, and always due to the same user. We don't go on FB to ask people to go to PH, so respect PH people, and leave us in peace on PH. Long live PH.
@frontfloater : Your S2 was a beauty, (even if I don't like the Vitaloni mirrors on S-series). And that's so right that this car is endearing. Full of faults, but also full of personality, and driving pleasure. I bought mine only 4 years ago, after a long series of pleasure car, but the TVR is a special experience.
Sorry, frontfloater, but it needs to be said..
I hope Mike posts as frequently on FaceAche, telling people to come here, as he does on here telling people to go there. NOT so they can come and plunder our excellent archive (which I will agree that Mike himself has done a huge amount to create and maintain) BUT to contribute their own experiences and knowledge (yes, and anecdotes) so the archive will continue to grow and flourish.
Ask on here and you might get an answer or two within 24 hours, you'll get half a dozen within the hour on FB wink he says.
Ask about anything at all on FaceBook on any subject, and you'll get a load of rubbish within 3 minutes.

My initial post was purely to let the new owner know (if he's on PH) that there is, not an alternative, but another source of help, advice and general S Series banter.
Lie ! That is exactly what you said :phillpot said:

PH is sadly all but dead these days
PH is nor dead, no more these days than the others. You can find all the help and advice here, within 24 or 48h as said by Mentall, and far more accurate and smarter here ! PH is sadly all but dead these days
i do lurk a little on Facebook, and what I see is what you'd expect: a poster comes in with a question, there's some instant (good/bad/indifferent/irrelevant) advice, and then Mike Phillips (or one of a few others) comes on with a link to a PH thread which answers the question in fifty different, mostly useful, ways.
But do the OP's post on here and add to the discussion, or update our vast body of knowledge? No they do not!
Somebody has discovered a newly manufactured Austin-Healey component which will fit our cars; somebody has applied a Speeduino ECU to a Ford V6 or Rover V8; somebody has found a new source of Sherpa indicators etc, etc.
If we're lucky Mike may relay bits of useful information to PH. I haven't seen much recently. Things move on, but not in PH 'S' land, apart from the 10? 20? people who still post here. And I don't believe that, in the future, people will be referring to an adequately indexed database of help and advice based on Facebook. No, it'll still be the PH resource, which effectively ceased being updated in ~2019.
How are you getting on with the V6 electric water pump, Mike? I'm still holding on to the spare timing cover from the 'free engine' for you.
PS so sorry, frontfloater: I'll leave it alone now.

What an absolute mess you all made of this thread within a day. If any fool wants to throw pointless insults around like this, and bicker like old women, you should confine it to private messages. Or maybe you could meet and hit each other with your handbags.
I hope the Mercedes forum isn't as bad as this ....

Im happy to hear another S heading north, they seem few and far up here, after 18 ish years Ive finally started the rebuild and decided to document it here rather than FB, I may not last on FB but Ive been on PH for forever It would be good to hear from new owner on here, a complete but probably very differnt car to mine due to the parts bin and the day of he week would be handy to see.
First of all, what a lovely car and I can appreciate your emotions at selling it. I would feel the same, so much so that I cant now; it is in my will for my son to take over! I do hope you don't regret it too much, I remember how I felt when the advent of a first child forced me to sell the Grantura. I have kept an eye on its ownership for many years now. I love the idea of a 75 year old driving it away hood down, as I am the same age. Let him know he is far from the only septuagenarian who loves his S or uses it as it should be used. As far as the new owner goes, can you just tell him to keep in touch and try both PH and FB as a contact medium. I suspect he will have his own choice there.
If he wants to have a chat 75 year old to 75 year old ask him to post on FB S Owners and Enthusiasts and ask greymrj to PM him and I will!
Secondly, sorry your post has been rather taken over, but I will add my pennyworth. Mike certainly DOES post on FB advising people of the content on PH. I also contributed a great deal to that archive. However it has become pretty pointless trying to keep threads on PH up to date. I was a fan of PH for a very long time and tried hard to keep TVR S stuff on here. It was so much easier to access archives and to keep comments in a sequential post. But regrettably it did not move with the times. I am an 'old' enthusiast' and I simply have to accept that 'young' enthusiasts rely on 'modern' social media that can be accessed easily on their phones. So a very reluctant transfer to FB, with all the problems and shortcoming it undoubtedly has.
Like it or not FB is a FAR more active medium for S owners. I am slightly surprised, although very relieved, that PH has survived thus far. I am very worried that at some time the archive of info on PH will be lost as we are very dependent on Haymarket's commercial priorities.
Take a recent event. 44 S owners involved, of which only a small handful are active on PH.
I try to keep looking in on PH but there is so much FB activity I often don't have the time.
I am afraid that is the current reality.

Well, OP, I’ve just stumbled across the car on Auto Trader, so if you are regretting it…

That's upsetting - I asked him to give me first refusal if he ever sold it. But I had assumed that would be years in the future, when my finances might be a little better.
Very poorly described as well - he is showing it as only having 152 BHP, when it has a full stage 2 engine conversion with rolling-road graph showing 193 BHP.
The asking price is only £500 more than he paid me, so allowing for haggling it doesn't look as though he is trying for a quick profit. He bought it without seeing or driving it, so perhaps at 75, he just found it was too raw for him.
If anyone wants full details of the car's condition, history and work done, I'll be able to give you much more information than the seller can.

Quick profit? He's going to be making a loss on it. It's September. There is a cost of living crisis. The advert is terrible. It hardly says anything, and there are hardly any photos. The car is also in Scotland, in the middle of nowhere, an hour north of Inverness, and 1.5 hours north of Aberdeen. None of those facts are going to help a quick sale.
Once it is discovered that the seller is selling it after only owning it for 2 or 3 weeks, then most people are going to run away. Whatever "genuine reason for sale" (excuse) he comes up with is unlikely to be believed.
If you want it back, then wait until it has sat around unsold for a while, and it will, then make a low offer, and you can buy your own car back and will have made a profit.
If it fails it's MOT, which it needs in the next couple of days, then he will have had to sort out that out for you too, and that will be an nice extra bonus for you!
