Brake Master Cylinder Replacement

Just had the old girl serviced down at Chris Bailey down in Canterbury (great job Chris :D) and all the major stuff is a-ok, with the exception of the brakes (kind of important I guess ;)).

According to Chris he's never come across a brake pedal thats so 'low', ie it only appears to be activate the brakes in the latter stages of pedal travel. I had suspected pads or something, but Chris has checked and these are fine, and bleed the whole system, after which the same symptons were in evidence. Althought the brakes work, I've never been blown away by there performance. He suspects that the master cylinder needs replacing. This has all but put an end to my planned trip into Europe :cry:

DO any of you guys know what the part number is or what i can replace it with? The cars a '91 S3. The pic below shows the setup, the red arrow points to a black zip tie type tag with the following written on it "6519 07/ 25DZ". I cant make out the yellow lettering it appears to be something like "??6Z3??". Has anyone got any ideas?

These are both for the v8S Brake master cylinder. Can anyone confirm that the parts are the same as the S3? Found this on the alternative parts list : -

There were two types of master cyclinder fitted to the S - first a Saab part, then later Ford Sierra.

Yours is the same as mine and I think it's the Saab 9000 part - certainly looks the same as this one found on google:

Think your right, it looks like the Saab unit, tried German & Swedish, Elk parts and Eurocar parts for the part without any joy.

Anyone else got any ideas of where to source one?

Just replaced my master cylinder - exactly the same as yours and it is the Saab 9000 one from around 1991 non ABS - above part numbers look right. A good maotor factors should be able to source one- not exactly cheap though - mine cost £118.
One point though - the white right angled inlets should be on the new cylinder when you buy it. Unfortunately when mine arrived none were on it - out of the 30 other clinders on the shelf only one had these inlets - needless to say Lucas/TRW will not supply relacmements only saying they come as part of the cylinder - eventually I had a new unit replaced.

OK so problem, sorry for getting on the high horse.

There a lot of people who come on looking for help, and then don't even give an "ok ta I'll try that" or "oh that worked ta" response - I try to help (quite a lot in the S forum I hope) where I can, and sometimes I wonder why I bother.
Hence my possible over-sensitivity...

Have spent the morning tying to chase this down. So far with the following success.....

The guy in my local dealers found the relavent numbers for the Saab unit, (was the same for the Saab and the TVR in his book)

Just got to try and find somewhere that has one now!

Good news.....

found a dealer local to me that has two on the shelf

All parts on 01628 525544, not too badly priced at 113.62 excl VAT

Just got to get over there (gingerly) and get it fitted

well done - just check it has those inlets fitted - not available separately and your old ones may well be squashed by the pipes from the resovior.

Maybe a bit late here, but you probably only need a repair kit with new seal rubbers. www.partsforsaabs.com have them for about £10 I think.

I hope this helps, may save you a few quid.
