improved airflow - update

With reference to my post last week re the poor airflow to the air filters I can updtae on what I have done....
step one .... remove the passenger side cold air vent pipe

ease (force) a piece of aluminium flexible pipe (the sort you use for tumble driers) down beside the radiator after fitting gauze to the end of it and wires ready to secure it to the lower bonnet grill

and angle it so when the bonnet shuts it is almost agianst the filter

At the front wire it onto the front lower grill

(and if you remove the passenger air pipe first unlike me your pipe may even still be round at this point)
The end result is good.... car picked up very well in all gears and with all the other new bits and modifications/ changes recently it is absolutely whizzing round to 6000 revs!!!
total cost for this modification about £15.

Once the fresh air duct was removed no graunching as there is enough room to fit it down the edge of the radiator.
Le TVR I have put it in as the air flow into the air filter is so poor on the S particularly the later models with the inner wheel arches. Rain shouldn't be an issue as the pipe has a fine gauze on the end of it which will diffuse water and the filter is oiled even if some did get through.

I was impressed with you efforts to supply cold(er) air into the induction system until the photo showing the "mesh" over the end of the feed pipe. Having spent 14 years as an Aerodynamicist I have to say that, from the pictures, it looks as the mesh would give about an 75% blockage factor (i.e. you've an equivelant open pipe size of 1/4 of what's there). What's it for? You have a filter on the air intake and a "rock catcher" in the grill so I'm at a loss as to why you need it.

I put it in place to catch flies..... 75% blockage factor you say....
I will remove it today which due to the ingenius :itsonlyapipeicon: design will be easy.... thanks for the tip
Very simple and effective solution there

Have you stuck a remote thermometer on it to see what difference it makes to the intake air on the filter. Worth doing as that may lead to some other subtle improvents such doubling up that pipe, or deflecting the air that comes through the Radiator away from it too.

I've been thinking about this for most of the day (since I read your post) and had been thinking you could use a couple of these
mounted behind the mesh with a couple of pipes running back to somewhere by the air filter. Just hadn't figured out what to do at the filter end - i.e. just leave the pipes or try and enclose the filter in a box. Not sure if you can just box it in or if it needs some clever calculations etc. to come up with a box (perhaps GREENV8S and others could comment??).
Anyway - it's another thing on the 'wish list' at the moment as I really need to start work on (and find funds for) the chassis, suspension etc......

Have you considered extending the existing intake pipes and moving the whole filter forward into the cold air in front of the rad? There is quite a bit of space out there. That's the approach I've taken on mine, although mine was a bit harder because I've got a single 85mm hose instead of two smaller flexies. It's quite a lot of additional work, but worth sealing the gap between the edge of the radiator and the bonnet while you're at it, this stops air recirculation round the rad and also keeps hot air away from your air intake when you are stationary.
Wouldnt the still longer lengths of corrigated plastic pipe slow down the flow of air so much as to be stationery by the time it arrived at the plenium?
Any Ram effect would be negated still further my moving filter and airflow sensors forward unless you went for as straight as possible metal pipe which looks impossible as there are so many bends involved.
I don't know if there is any 'Ram' effect with the piper filters we have mind, and cooler air is a definate bonus.

It was new last year....
one of the benefits of buying from a dealer with a warranty... it weeped so I asked for a new one!!! and got them to remove the gearbox and get it reconditioned and replace the clutch master cylinder....while they had the car, while I went away on holiday :rightresulticon:first run in the car with the mesh removed....
I have to say this is definately making a difference to the car particularly in lower gears... it is quicker to the red line especially first gear. Car now feels like it is wanting to go faster rather than having to floor it to make it happen...
I will see how it goes over the next few weeks and let you know how it goes..and see how the tubing / fixing etc stands up and any weak areas.

agree that if you can get it to the front so much better.
It is overkill really, but it is a pretty good insulator and nice and smooth on the inside, as a bonus it looks quite smart (imo) and should last practically forever.
