Transmission backlash
Discussion
Hi all,
The winter is coming, it's time to put the car on the lift, to do the maintenance and to fix every little problems.
I feel a lot of backlash between my throttle pedal, and the rear wheels.... There is a huge distance .... I feel a lot of play in all the transmission, so I want to check all. Another symptom is a vibration under the car above 60mph.
I think these problems can be cause by several devices. From the engine to the rear wheels :
- Engine mounts
- Gearbox mount
- Prop shaft UJs
- Prop shaft balancing
- Diff backlash
- Diff mounts
- Driveshafts
I have no play at all neither in the driveshafts nor in the prop shaft UJs.
Maybe the prop shaft needs to be balanced. I will find a professional to do that. I think the vibration can be due to enter and exit axle misalignment of the prop shaft. If the engine is going down, due to worn bushes, gearbox axel and diff axel, are no more parallel, and this is a very important point with a 2 UJ transmission to be homokinetic (constant-velocity)
I have a small backlash in the diff itself. The car has 140k miles.... nothing unusual to have a small play. Could you give me a maximum angular value for a diff backlash (fixing wheels with handbrake, maximum angular play of the prop shaft entry)
Engine / gearbox / diff mounts : I will place an order at BurtonPower. Is it OK for FP292 (x2) (52mm engine mount), FP292C (cups) , GBRK400 for the gearbox, DIFFMOUNT-COS for the rear diff mount. Is it ok for the reference and the quality of different products ?
Is there any alternative to Superflex for 025D007A diff bushes ? 200€ + Shipping fees + custom duties (15€) for 2 bushes, sorry to be stingy but this is double of the Burton diff mount, machined from the bloc.
Do you see anything else to check or replace.
Thanks for your help.

A year ago I bought rubber differential mounts from DeLorean ( £52 for two including tax and postage) but it looks like they now only have the Poly ones?

Mike, were they from/for the rear trailing arms of the Delorean?https://www.deloreango.com/uk/catalogsearch/result...
If so this might be a cheaper option but no idea re postage;
