A quick question to all you S owners. A friend of mine has an S3 and no internet access, so im asking on his behalf. Will the 24V Cosworth engine go into his S3? Most, if not all (i think) were auto's, so can a manual g/box be put on the back of it? Would you need the engine managment system from the granada???? Etc, Etc.

Any ideas anyone has about getting more power (i keep telling him to just buy a V8 one) would be great.

The 24 valve Cosworth V6, (rumoured to have been designed by Brian Hart of Hart F1 engines based in Harlow, Essex) does apparently fit! The engine mounts and block are as for the old 12 valve V6, but as we all know, the heads are a different kettle of fish!
You are quite correct about the ECU, the engine was only fitted to 'grannys' with auto 'boxes in the UK and the ECU will need to be completely re-mapped if you wish to fit a manual 'box, (He will need to get hold of a complete engine management loom as well). The engine may also require a different cam, as auto 'box engines usually have a different cam profile. A flywheel will also be needed to replace the torque converter. There are a few companies around who can do this, and Burton Power in Ilford, Essex may be able to help. The 24 valve engine is good for 200 bhp in standard form, so more power is easilly attainable above this level, using the usual tricks like porting and flowing the heads.
It will probably be an expensive conversion, the engines alone go for around £500+ including the loom, before any modifications. The V8 is a better way to get more power, but since he already has an S3, it may be more cost effective to develop the existing 12 valve V6, which can be made to develop around 200+ bhp, especially if he can do the strip / rebuild himself.

Didn't Tower View do a Cossie 24V transplant into an S series?

Thanks for the response. Best left alone and go for the tune on his engine really.

Still doing it... Apparently gluing a Green V8S back together again and an old Ropey 520 Wedge has prevented much work on it. Last work was a huge bonnet bulge being added to provide better clearance.

Just checked and yup, mine is in the car park where I left it! Somebody else having trouble with theirs?

Sorry, but must set the record straight on this. Brian Hart had nothing to do with this engine (FBA - in Cosworth speak). This is a complete in house Cosworth designed and manufactured engine, though the starting point was the Ford OHV V6 as found in many a Granada.

Well that only leaves a couple of hundred possibilities then! (Green V8S: not common, just popular!)

Bit late on this one really! (been busy).Ok few quick points

Engine produces 207BHP in standard form (removing PAS pump and A/C pump may release a couple more horses), this is what I was told by the 24V expert at AES engines, there is also a later version which has a revised emission freindly plenum and more electronic gubbins.

Cams (all 4 of them!), no problem as they are ground for torque
Heads, good for 300BHP in standard form
ECU, fine just needs the park switch to be activated
Gearbox, type 9 fits straight on with bellhousing etc
Exhaust manifolds, need modifying

This is the conversion I will be doing on my S2 shortly (albiet 3.7L with fully mapable injection, AES cams, T5 box etc)as I have a brand new zero mileage unit sat here, I also have enough spares to build 90% of another engine so if anyone needs any parts give me a shout.By the way with 3.2 and a single turbo 450BHP is achievable, just need to find somewhere with no speed bumps!

Cheers

Some chap has done this swap already into an 280i wedge, have a look on the wedgepages site under project cars.
He made it sound quite straightfoward.

Aren't these engines a bit prone to snapping timing chains and costing a fortune to repair?

Cheers, Phil

Yes they go every 60.000 miles and are about £600 for the chain alone, don't think I will worry about it for now though!

Alternatively, isn't the Explorer 4.0 based on the 2.9 V6 block?

I have A Mk2 Ford Escort with an 24v Cossie in it.
I used the flywheel and clutch of a Sierra 2.9 12v(Granada also fits)
I have a bellhousing of a Granada Mk1 and a 5-speed gearbox of an old 2.3 Diesel Sierra.

Ford is like LEGO: Everything fits.

I used the standard ECU as is without gearbox ECU.
The are some trouble codes in the ECU of the Autobox, but all systems ar working normally (according to the tester).

GO FOR IT
TRUST ME! It runs like Hell!!

Anybody want a turbo manifold for one of these?
