S CLUB HEAVEN 2022 GET THE BALL ROLLING
Discussion
I put the following on our FB S Owners and Enthusiasts page. There are 1300 members of that group.....I have had just 5 responses!
19 cars turned up this year, it was a good friendly gathering, but that is a tiny fraction of the S cars out there. Very few S cars turned out for any of the national events.
I do have a proposal to put forward for 2022 but, to be honest, if that is the real level of interest I can do other things with my time.
Is it worth pursuing an annual S event further?
S CLUB HEAVEN 2022!
Time to start thinking about it! Lets get the ball rolling for 2022!
Following discussions this year it is appropriate to review aspects of this event and try to set out a ‘template’ for the immediate future years.
The event relies on someone taking the initiative each year to run it, with help from those who have done it before. So it relies on one or more of YOU to take on 2022, with support, and working to a ‘template’.
Can we therefore have views on the following please, then we can progress to sorting 2022, and getting a ‘lead’ member, venue and date sorted much earlier.
14 points so difficult to deal with this on FB, can you please PM me your views, I will then collate, consult with the other two moderators, and then set it up.
1. NAME; It was called S Club Heaven in reference to a pop group long since gone. Not sure if it has any relevance for newer, predominantly younger, members? Should we change it and if so what to?
2. MEMBERSHIP; It has become adopted and supported as an official TVRCC national event. Should it be a members event only?
3. FACEBOOK PAGE; Moving details of the meeting to the ‘events’ tab on this site has NOT worked well. That tab hasn’t been seen and info got broken up and updates got missed. An experiment that didn’t work. I recommend that we return to a separate site. That would not however be a separate ‘membership’ site but available only to members of this site. (Posting on PH would continue for the immediate future but only a small minority now who view it)
4. DATES; A summer weekend, but probably best to avoid Bank Holidays which tend to be ‘family’ weekends. The main date for the event would then usually be the Saturday.
5. TYPE OF LOCATION; The location chosen needs to link into some other public event in order to create enough interest for a weekend. That need not necessarily be solely a car event (air show, steam gathering etc might also work?). The main date (Sat or Sun) for that event could influence planning. Saturday would suit us better.
6. ACCOMMODATION/FACILITIES; the location must provide decent camping opportunities on the Friday and Saturday night. Very helpful if the organiser can provide local economy hotel/B&B information. If possible it would be great if there was also the possibility of, those members who wish to, having a meal together at a reasonably convenient location. A moderate drive out to a meal proved popular this year.
7. GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION; we have tended to move locations around, often because a ‘lead’ member has taken the initiative in their area. If we were to do so again then perhaps it is time for the SW area to lead? There are now a good few members there. But that is a difficult location for many. Records suggest that a central location draws the most members ( I may be wrong but I think the highest number may have been Newark?). Obviously easy motorway access helps those coming some distance. (I am not sure the old PH map of membership distribution has much relevance any more?)
8. COST, there hasn’t been a fee for the event but that puts the organiser(s) in a difficult position. There are costs involved and while the TVRCC will support to some degree that isn’t easy for the organiser(s). It becomes particularly problematic re trophies and momentoes. It is far easier to transfer money cashless these days. I would suggest a small ‘registration’ fee for the event is introduced.
9. DRIVE OUT; I think a lot depends on the location and the event we are linked to. Big events create logistical difficulties, while some locations have good driving road opportunities that are not to be missed! Owners who have driven a long way are not keen on a long drive out. If there is attractive driving locally however it is a shame to miss it. I would suggest a max 1 hour trip and if this can be associated with a social meal opportunity so much the better.
10. JUDGING; Bit of a conundrum here! There are certainly conflicting views. Judging has been a major feature in most years but this year there just seemed to be a wish to get together as friends in a relaxed way. Or was that just my perception as a post covid meet? What is in the best interest of the S marque, and in the best interest of S owners? We have tried judging by type of S, but as there are now 6 types (S1, S2, S3, S4, V8S, and modified S) that leads to the situation where there are few cars in each category and 18 trophies to fund! (My award for best S1 a few years ago, was nice, but it was just best of 2 cars!) Do we want it to be a real concourse competition where the most perfect car wins in each class or, as this year, all S cars are judged together on the basis of participants ‘favourite’ S cars of those present. That requires each participant to decide their best 3 in order, and 3 trophies and certificates per year (it requires the organiser to tot up ‘points’. This was awkward as it was a 3 day event but not an issue if Saturday was clearly the ‘meet’ day). It resulted in no single car dominating the results. (It was interesting to note that Martin Lilley, ex owner of TVR, chose as his favourite a well engineered ‘go’ car not a concours show car). (The loudest S was avoided this year, the threatened decibels at dawn shoot out between 2 cars on the campsite would not have been well received!)
What is YOUR preference?
We have a perpetual trophy in memory of Ken Appleton, who did a lot to keep the S marque alive when few were valued. It goes to the best ‘go car not show car’. That will continue. (It used to be referred to as the ‘Clarence Boddinger’ trophy in reference to Kens identity on PH, this means little now and will be dropped). (I think there is a case for developing that trophy to remember the names of other key S enthusiasts who did a lot for the marque and have passed away like Norman Farmer, Chris Bark, Barry Stone. What do you think? Is this the best way to remember such people?)
11. TROPHIES & MOMENTOES; I presume trophies would be expected in future years. Dependent on what is agreed on 10 above it would be three (graded) or potentially 18! Momentoes have proved popular in the past in the form of event specific T shirts or mugs/glasses. Is that something seen as important in the future? Should the event ‘fee’ include for this up front to make it easier for the organiser?
12. RAFFLE; we have often held a raffle at the event. However this puts an additional burden on the ‘lead’ member. What is the purpose? Do we want a raffle? There are mixed feelings. A number of us are involved in charities already. Would it be better for another member to volunteer to use the opportunity for charity fundraising for their chosen charity?
13. WHATSAPP GROUP; this proved successful and popular and should be used again for all participants.
14. Anything else we should consider?

I believe this year had been greatly affected by the Covid pandemic and normally between 20 and 50 cars turn up. So I do think a 2022 event should be organised.19 cars turned up this year, it was a good friendly gathering, but that is a tiny fraction of the S cars out there. 14. Anything else we should consider?
1. Unsure about a name but SCH is fine for the moment.
2. I think any-one with a TVR S should be able to attend, whether a TVRCC member or not.
3. Agreed that the Events tab did not work. SCH worked slightly better, I think the event info should be published on all 3 platforms - FB / PH / TVRCC
4. Agreed - best avoid Bank Hols. No matter when/where the event, there will always be people who cannot attend. May be better attended if held away
from the school holidays.
5. Agreed - need to piggy back an event, obviously up to the organisers.
6. Agreed - would be good if both camping and reasonably priced hotel (Premier INN?) were nearby.
7. Hardest part is to have organisers, however, no matter where the event takes place I (and you I'm sure) will help and guide as much as needed.
8. Needs to be discussed as to what, if any, memento's - tee shirts/mugs/tankards, would be appropriate. I believe none unless paid for in advance.
Maybe 2 annual trophies, 1. favourite car and 2. The Ken Appleton (Go Car not Show Car).
9. I would prefer a 2 hour drive out - probably to a pub or even a round trip and a BBQ upon return (own food and bbq's) and 50 to 80 miles. This gives a
better chance of decent roads. Those who don't want a scenic drive can go directly to the pub?
10. See 8. above - only 2 annual trophies.
11. See 8. above.
12. We should leave that to the organisers if they want to, especially if they have a favourite charity. Raffles are HARD WORK.
13. Whatsapp proved useful - great idea
14. Can't think of any apart from asking for volunteer organisers. I will help with any run out routes and making into satvav/google maps files.
I am a member on FB but rarely look at it as I really don't like/get how it works so didn't see your post on there. I much prefer a straight forward forum format such as PH.
1. Name of event. Not really worried what it's called but I'm sure someone will come up with a witty alternative if required.
2. Keeping it open to all S owners would be preferable to maximise potential attendees.
3. Agree a separate FB site would be better for numpties like me to be able to find it.
4. Always a good idea to avoid bank hols and the associated congestion/crowds/booking nightmares they tend to bring.
5. Agree
6. Agree
7. Moving location around the UK will give more people the chance to attend at least now and again without too much travelling. So hopefully encourage new faces to attend. Just comes down to who and where any volunteer organisers are based.
8. Think an event fee would not be unreasonable, especially if mementos are being arranged.
9. Any drive out could have the option of leaving at a pre determined point to return to base/pub.
10. Judging. Always a minefield. Whilst attendances are low I would agree with Magpies - 2 awards.
11. As above, pre pay in advance at point of confirming attendance.
12. Optional for organisers.
13. Whats Whatsapp? Will ask my teenager to explain.
14. As Magpies said. I'm sure anyone thinking of volunteering to organise will be only too glad of your help and experience to guide them along.

12. Optional for organisers.
13. Whats Whatsapp? Will ask my teenager to explain.
14. As Magpies said. I'm sure anyone thinking of volunteering to organise will be only too glad of your help and experience to guide them along.
Richard,
I now live in USA but - As a past S3 owner and key PHer from the initial Pistonfest and SCH 2005+ Events.. I would also reach out to Ex-owners on the PH forums. I am sure Schnozz, Pies, TVRV8S, Ted,, V8smith, mycroft, PODIE…. and many more.
Would love to take part of a SCH event.. if it is interest you are looking for.. many many TVR owners started out with an S, nostalgia and respect for those V6 and V8 rockets.
There is a classic car importer locally to me who has brought over a few S series and Chim’s.. I’ll wait until the Griff 500 is 25 yrs old before going down that route.
Good luck with all your endeavors to keep SCH alive….
Dave..

HI Richard. you will have seen my reply to this topic on FB.
I'm not sure how many people are still looking at this board maybe if we ask everyone who sees this to just +1 we could get an idea if its still being used..
Please keep up the efforts - we need people to persist or we wont get good events in the future. I've been asking a few of the old stagers why they couln't make it this year to see if there is any common issues.

Apologies for the delay in coming back to you on this Richard.
Q
Firstly, can I just say how much I enjoyed catching up with everyone at this year's SCH...the social side of these meets is so important. So thank you Richard & Mick for all your efforts.
Here's my thoughts...
1. Name of event. Personally, I'd like to keep the S Club Heaven (SCH) as it has a history and links to other events such as the annual tour that takes place.
2. Keeping it open to all S owners would be preferable.
3. Can't comment in this as I'm not a user of FB.
4. Agree - bank holidays just add to the traffic as well as can restrict opportunities to attend for some.
5. Agree
6. Agree
7. I think a central location works the best, Newark or similar certainly used to get more attendees...but it would depend on what events are on that we could 'piggy back'.
8. Think a registration fee is okay...maybe with the option to include a memento pre-order?
9. Any drive out could have the option of a direct route to a pub/meet point so those that wish to can just go direct?
10. Judging. I think the 'go not show' award & a 'shiny/showcase' award are all that are needed
11. As 8, pre-order/pre-pay in advance at point of confirming attendance.
12. I would advise against a raffle...I ran one a few years back and have to admit it is a lot of work to organise.
13. Agree...does work well.
Cheers
Jaye

Hear hear!
Well done Richard & Mick for getting this year's gathering together.
It was great to see new faces as well as the old familiar suspects.
I'm up for SCH '22 wherever and whenever it takes place.
The anticipation is building...
I undertake to pop in here more regularly, to keep an eye on further developments.
I don't (and won't) 'do' Facebook.
