V4 anyone?????
Discussion
Help please,
Coming back from a run yesterday evening, my V8 suddenly lost power and appeared to be running on about 4 cylinders.
I pulled over, turned off, then restarted again and all 8 came on song. Seems to me that by turning off I 'reset' something
The dissy cap and leads were new at service/rebuild by TVR Power in April. I renewed the 'main/ignition' relay last week as it just cut out one afternoon - did the trick no more cutting out; just this (poor)running on what seems to be one bank.
Its definitely (I think) ignition related, because I can smell unburnt fuel coming out the 'zorst.
Advice anyone? Nick.

Any ideas yet chaps/chapesses?
Thought the combined brain power and experience of the S forum would have come up with some pointers by now.
I would add that everything was pretty damn hot after a fairly spirited drive home - - so could be a factor!
Cheers Nick.
Is there anyone out there, Scully?
Thanks guys,
- definitely runs on less than 8 pots...and
- the smell of neat petrol from the exhaust is very distintive.
As I said, once the ignition is turned off, and then I restart, the problem seemed to have cleared.
I can't manage to get round and under the bonnet whilst the engine is behaving like this because its so lumpy/almost on the point of stalling at idle rpm. The dissy cap and leads have done less than 3000 miles
What do people think about a dodgy coil starting to break down under heat?

Has it re-occurred Nick?
We don't have much to work with here except go back to basics...are you getting a spark in both banks?
It could just be time to change your plugs if they were not done at service.
Plugs changed at service - along with cap and leads.
Harry/Mike - don't believe it's injectors, because I can smell the fuel so strongly....rather than burnt hydrocarbons!
Hasn't happened since Sunday.

I agree with Harry, the only thing common to four cylinders is the circuit that drives the injectors. Could it be a poor connection at the ECU connector?
I thought that they were sequential, but I am not sure of that. A smell of unburnt fuel says ignition problems to me rather than lack of fuel.

Thought I'd share the results of my investigations with the forum.
On Saturday, I remade the electrical connections to the amplifier module on the side of the dissy, along with the wire from the coil/amp module that bundles with the input wiring to the ECU from the Air Flow meter.
Whilst I was at it, I also cleaned the wire lattice of the air flow meter and the throttle butterfly...and cleaned the stepper motor. The throttle butterfly, in particular, was pretty gunky.
I also changed the coil!!. Result - is a much nicer drive. I had a good 60 mile test Sunday afternoon and its running like a sewing machine (touch wood). I can only assume that this poor firing was the coil being unable to recover during the 'dwell' period as the internals started to break down. I tried the coil because the engine would always start up 'properly' from cold....it was only when it had been running for 30 mins or so that the poor running occured.

Didn't know you'd swapped the V8S for a 911 Nick
.
Harry
PS Glad to see you seem to have sorted it..... until the next time
Harry, - - I said V4 NOT Flat 6
Gassing Station | S Series | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff

, reason I say that is the only thing I can think of which would do that is the injectors, AFAIK they fire in banks of 4 at a time.
