Hi everyone,

I'm shifting to an Emerald ECU on a S3C and need to fit a trigger wheel (36-1) to the crank pulley.

Are the crank pulleys/balancers individual to each engine or can I buy a wheel with a trigger ring or potentially buy a used 2.9 wheel, have trigger ring monted and swap for my existing one?

Also wondering if to run "wasted spark" or find a way to mount a cam position sensor in the old dizzy? I'm going coil pack with the Emerald. What would be the advantages with the latter and is it worth the effort?

All input and pictures much appreciated

I've always been lead to believe flywheel and front pulley/damper are balanced with the crank, but I could be wrong?

If you want to keep the car mobile why not, to be on the safe side, fit the replacement pulley short term and modify your existing pulley ready to be re-fitted.

On the V8S the belt drive pulley is bolted to the hub / damper assembly and not integral. I bolted the trigger wheel and blower pulley in front of the drive pulley without any problems. I don't know whether the V6 is similar.

I converted the dizzy to a cam phase sensor by removing all but one lobe and using the existing dizzy pickup as a sensor. Once I got the polarity right that worked fine as well.

And don't forget that on Cologne engines, the dizzy is also the oil pump drive. So if you are going coil pack, then you'll need to make up a dummy dizzy, just to drive the oil pump.

Dummy camshaft drives the oil pump surely?

My 'dummy dizzy' is a standard dizzy modified to act as a cam phase sensor and with a blanking cap instead of the HT cap. I think this is a common approach for aftermarket conversions.

Hi,

Thank you for the feedback.

I do have a stub drive to replace the dizzy and drive the oil pump. It's from a 4.0 and the use coil pack. It is a direct a drop in. But I may very well do as V8S points out and use the old dizzy as cam position sensor.

What is the advantage with that compared to wasted spark from an injection point. I can see the ignition point value with giving more recovery time but what about injection?

On the V6 there are 2 pulleys, 3 grooves in total. One pulley groove on the balancer it selves and one pulley that bolted on with two belt grooves. In the S the ancillary equipment is driven from the bolt on pulley. I drive my supercharger from a third pulley outside that.

I'm still confused if the crank pulley/balancer is individual to the engine or not. If not there seem to be 2.9 Cosworth pulleys that fit and do have the trigger wheel integrated in the balancer. The Cosworth one also has a serpentine/poly-c belt pulley.

Any input on this or anyone having swapped the old belt type for the serpentine/poly-v belt setup?

Regards
