Exhaust wrap fail, anyone made heat shields?
Discussion
Hi everyone,
S3 V6.
I wrapped my almost new headers in exhaust wrap 2 years ago. Last year I managed to crack one of the manifold backing out of the garage. Stupid.
Anyway, when removing the wrap I was chocked at the corrosion on the header. I keep my car in a dry garage and always run it warm after washing. It looked awful with flakes of metal falling off. Good metal beneath as it turns out and we are now welding the crack.
I have had wrap on the car earlier and on other cars but for whatever reason these headers did not like it. I talked to the "racing guys" and they said that the heat in combination that the metal cannot expand in the wrap causes the problem. I just don't know, but now I have ripped it off on both sides.
I plan to make some aluminum heat shields that goes on top of the headers and also cover the outside towards the fiberglass. My idea is to make a plate and anchor in the 3 exhaust ports in the heads and add a vertical piece to protect the sides.
Anyone here made anything similar? If so, pics and ideas please.

Ok. So I took all the exhaust wrap off on both headers and made some 1,5mm aluminum heat shields. They will bolt to the heads on top of the exhaust ports. Hot place but the heads and water cooled and Im really after the radiated heat. They cover the top and the outsides of the headers.
Not tested yet but seem to fit rather well. About 2cm clearance and the engine won´t move that much.
Maybe not be needed now but will be when the blower goes back in.

Hi magpipes,
Stainless would be nice! Mine is mild steel with race cats and v-band connectors. May be good when running FI.
Anyway, tomorrow is first start since september. I hope it works. After MOT its a tear down to add new ECU and re-mount the supercharger. I have had it for years but it has sat on the shelf for the last 10 years. Now I have had it serviced and added a water-to-air intercooler and bigger TB (Ford Lightning) . Fun to see where is goes…
