Dratted Door Handle Cable

Hello All,

A minor pain in the arse problem to solve.

The internal door handle cable has snapped. Having taken the door trim off, I can see it's snapped off about the last couple of inches of the cable. There's no way it's going to reach unfortunately.

Anybody know where to get a replacement ? And how to get the old cable out of the handle come to that ?

Mine isnt an actual cable but a solid piece of steel rod (don't know if this is normal). In theory if you just get a welding rod or something similar of the correct diameter and feed it in it should work fine.

pull the inner cable out of the outer cable

cut an inch or so off the outer cable

push the inner cable back through

Fix the broken piece of cable back on with one of those heavy-duty screw-terminal electrical wire connectors

Should do until you get another one )ne of my doors was fixed like that ages ago)

I also managed to get the inner cable off the handle, but I can't remember how you do it! As far as Ican remember, here's a screw that holds the handle into the door trim, and also (at the back) a slide-in u-clip thing that holds it in place. If you get that off, the rest virtually falls apart, I think.

A cunning solution - that should keep me going for a while.

Come to think of it - the bottom E string of a guitar - or even from a bass guitar - would do a grand job. Might have to check that out ...

If it's solid, it'll probably be piano wire, which is easy to get hold of.

Curses ! The electrical connector block solution was fouled by the lock mechanism. Unfortunately the break was right up just beneath the bent hook bit. So on pulling the handle, the connector block gets jammed into the the brass square bit in the lock slider.

Question : Is the sleeving doing anything related to the tensioning ? I don't think it should be, but I thought I should ask.

I think I have two solutions left. Crop the (solid) wire much further down (probably losing some sleeving on the way) and rig a similar solution to the previous one using the elctrical connector block but with a fresh piece of "extender" wire - thus avoiding the snarl.

Or replace the wire all together which would be better in the long run. The problem here is that I really can't see how to get the handle shroud out of the door so that I can fit the new wire. There's nothing in the bible on it either. Any ideas ?

See my earlier post - take the door trim off, take out a screw that goes through from the front and then you'll find some sort of retaining U-clip thing holding it on from the back.
