First post as a S owner, so be gentle smile I've had a couple of Chimaeras but picked up a nice S2 today for the right money.

Most things work except my fuel gauge reads full when empty and vice versa. Is this likely to be wrong sender/gauge combination (swapping the wires didn't work but was worth a try), or possibly an earthing issue somewhere?

I'm sure I'll get used to it, it'd be nice to have it work the right way round though

thanks in advance

Pete

Hi Pete and welcome to the wonderful World of 'S' ownership.

Well, if you have a accurate fuel gauge then you are better off than most of us smile There have been many, many posts on here over the years about fuel gauges and how to get them reading correctly. My guess (and it is a guess) is that you have the "wrong" sender unit or the "wrong" gauge. Either way my advice would be to not worry about it. If it reads correctly in between the 'F' & 'E' then just remember it's upside down.

Enjoy your 'S' thumbup

Presuming you have the matching TVR logo'd gauge I would suspect the fault lies with the sender?

Try taking the wire off the sender and putting to earth, gauge should read full.

Does the gauge go from empty to full as the fuel is used up i.e. it's actually working (but in the wrong sense)? My gauge reads empty when the tank is over 3/4 full and I assume it's worn that bit of track off the sender or something like that, but it still works in the normal way the rest of the time.

The sender fits into the side of the tank so it may have been fitted upside down.
Been a while since I fitted one but I don't think there was any form of 'register' preventing you from fitting it the wrong way round.

Thanks for the welcome and the helpful advice

Phillpot - took the wire off and earthed it, gauge reads full, its the TVR logo gauge so I assume its either the wrong sender, or its fitted upside down as per Steve's suggestion

GreenV8s, yes it goes from empty to full as the tank empties

cheers all

Could be an upside down sender. There's no idiot proof tab to prevent that happening. But you'd have to be a complete plonker the get that wrong. They are out there though.

Here's a link you might find helpful LINK

hi thanks that's very useful smile

I'll probably renew the sender whilst I'm in there and sort out the wiring (the previous keeper was a fan of blue insulting tape)

thanks all no doubt more questions will follow

cheers

As other have said, sender upside down, there is no locating tab (at least not on my S2)

If you are unsure when you're replacing it, a high resistance corresponds to a low reading.

I have had some 'upside down' gauge vinyl's made. My gauge reads upside down as it is a jaguar in tank pump gaugeQ!
easy to apply and just add 5ltr of fuel at a time and check where on the gauge it reads.
If you want one £5 incl postage
