Hi all - simple question before I get the tools out. Can you remove a gearbox on an S3 without engine removal?

Many thanks!

Yep, but it's a bit of a struggle (even bigger struggle getting it back in) hehe

You working on a ramp or axle stands?

Lots of old posts on the subject

Thanks...Axle stands... I’m just wondering if it’s worth the hassle or pay someone with a ramp!

I think if mine had to come out again I'd seriously consider taking it out with the engine ( I have an engine hoist but they can be hired quite reasonably I believe)?

Depending on condition of your car it would be ideal opportunity to do a few other jobs, engine mounts, bonnet hinges, wiring connections to bonnet, flush and refill cooling system, replace old hoses and clips, replace heat shield on inner wings ..... the list goes on wink

My winter job was just that. Engine and box out, full chassis refurb, new bushes, joints, brakes, clutch, etc etc. The problem I now have is the release bearing seems to have been disturbed from the clutch fork whilst installing the box back again, so it looks like taking it apart again. Sigh... the first time it was engine and box, but I really don’t want to have to take it all apart again, so looking for an easier solution.

For reference it appears I have a unique clutch slave cylinder, a unique clutch bearing and unique slave bracket. The measurements on all of that lot were not know by Racetech who I have found to be very knowledgeable in this area.

Difficult to photo, just had to enlarge the hike in the bracket, then grind off flanges on the cylinder!
