radio aerial

The whip style aerial on the back of my car was split, the car also has a second hole on the opposite side of the car with a rubber grommet in it.

My plan was to fit a new short aerial as a replacement and fit another on the other side just for the sake of the appearance.

Sounds straight forward up till now....of course it wasn't as I ended up cutting the old mast to get it out, what was left is in the picture.

My issue is that it seems to have a second cable,is this an earth perhaps?

Can anyone help with this or point me to where I can obtain a new part, I can't seem to find anything helpful online

I would have thought:
screened wire is signal and earth to the radio
Power wire for raising / lowering the original electric aerial
Earth wire for raising / lowering the original electric aerial

Have you got a piece of wire mesh glassed onto the inside of the wing? That was where my aerial was grounded. Seems odd but it's there.
