I use only Valvoline VR1 Racing 20w-50 in my S1. I did run it briefly on a synthetic flushing oil after fitting new heads but drained it immediately and refilled with the Valvoline.
Whilst running it to flush the oil galleries I noticed there was a fine spray line of oil on the chassis member below the crankshaft pulley. With the thicker Valvoline I don't get that line of oil so I guess the either the thinner stuff was able to make it past the crankshaft seal, or I loosened crud by flushing it and that has now sealed it properly!
