I'm after a little help if possible.

How do you value the s series ? I'm aware of a v8 that needs a minimum of the out riggers doing and maybe other work. (I haven't seen the car and the owner is reluctant to sell). The car has been off the road for a number of years so will certainly need sorting out brakes etc.

What would you value it at given the owner seems to want to sell but needs a helping hand to get him to do so.

Any idea's on what would be a reasonable price to offer ?

Unfortunately I can't receive e mails so if you could then replies on here.

I may put this on the face ache page as well.

Thanks

Mike

All the 'S' Series will need outriggers at some time. As V8's come at a premium it's harder to add value because it costs the same to renovate the V6 chassis as it does the V8. It's the same with almost all the other jobs eg running gear, suspension, interior etc. If you want a project then going for a cheap V6 makes more sense unless you can get a V8 for similar money.
You'd be better off finding a really nice V8S with a willing seller and spending the extra. It'll cost you a lot less in the long run.

Similar thoughts to Phillpot

There's a very high mileage one which is a bit rough round the edges been for sale for ever at £10.5k so this sounds about right.

Maybe £10k if its been properly stored and bodywork and interior are in good shape and don't need any work?

Maybe, but it could cost another £10k to make it really nice. So why not spend £20k up front and enjoy the ride? Given the way things are at the moment, a V8S that might have been worth £20k a year ago could be had for less now. Maybe there's a bargain out there waiting for you if you look.

I don't know accurately the V8S, but the engine is a Rover V8, so it should suffer from hasty camshaft wear as any Rover V8, when the 2.9l V6 (S2-S3-S4) is pretty bullet-proof.

If your guy doesn't think about selling the car and you ask for it, he will think he owns the eighth wonder of the world, and will ask for an excessive price. If you are already sure the outriggers have to be replaced, you can plan to remove the body from the frame. For me, the cost is not necessarily high, mechanical components are often inexpensive, but it will take you a huge amount of time !

I can't give you an estimate, prices are too different between France and UK.

Depends on how well the engine is looked after. Could be as low as 60,000 miles but a new cam isn't that expensive and can be replaced without taking the engine out (I think).

Hi thanks for the replies.

I don't really have anymore information than what i've told you, i'm aware of a car but don't know anything more.
The owner is in two minds wether to sell, he can't afford to repair it but it's his pride and joy as well.
I was hoping to get a good idea of what to offer to try and get him to change his mind about selling.

At the price quoted i think it may be there a long time, looking at a std s that just needs the outriggers doing they can range from £2k to £3.5 asking price so why the massive step up for a v8?

I wish i had £10 i'd go an look at the one with 150k miles on it.

I was thinking of a cheeky bid of £3.5 k but don't think it's worth doing it.

Oh well i'll have to get the wedge out of hibernation and have some, but i still fancy a v8s and wouldn't mind taking a project on.

Thanks again for the replies.

Mike

I did say a cheeky bid of £3.5 k i know i wouldn't stand a chance.

I was hoping to get the guy at least thinking of

My wedge is a 350SE with an uprated engine so it's got some go in it. the FHC is a boring 3.5 but needs a lot of work doing to sort it out.

I suppose i'm being greedy wanting another one.

Correct. I haD mine done as I don’t have the skills and would rather not risk doing it wrong anyway. Not an engine out job. I’m sure it can be done cheaply by skilled people on here, but I know where my limitations are and stick to what I can do.
