Peel the vinyl back, very carefully cut 10mm off the fibreglass, pull trim back round and glue.
Hole will obviously now be 10mm bigger but gearstick gaiter will still fill it.... no one will ever know

This.
Looks like your gearstick has caused the damage in the first place with some enthusiastic changes maybe? So you will hide the vinyl damage and stop the damage from reoccurring.Win, win
I agree with phillpot - peel back, cut the fibreglass and re-glue.
The damage will be caused by the gearstick hitting that edge, so giving a little more room would be good.
Fitting a trim piece will not work if no trimming has been done as that would make more contact between the stick and the edge.

Yep, mine was in about the same state.
My opinion of why it it happens (on 2.9 with T9 g-box) concurs with the above. That's it's the stick hitting the console front edge. My best guess to why is, as the stick has a dog leg in it, it's stroke is not only forward/back, it also goes up & down too.
Now I have a AJ30 Jag engine and g-box fitted, it doesn't do that.
My fix, was to hand cut an alloy picture frame for the hole, cover it in vinyl, over lapping the inside of the original hole and glue in place on the underside of the console, thus covering the damage. The frame being held in place by self tapping screws.
