Hi all

I hope everyone is staying safe, fit & well during these strange & unprecedented times...

Can anyone point me in the direction of a replacement water pump (2.9 V6 Engine)?

Mine seems to be on it's way out - intermittent over heating - have checked fluid levels, etc and all are good & I have a manual over-ride fan which still does not reduce the temperature as it heads in to the red - which suggests that the water in the cooling system isn't being circulated properly.

Any other factors that anyone can think of that might be causing this??

Many thanks in advance.

Stay safe.

Cheers
Jaye

I'm new to this myself, but have you checked that there is no air in the system? There is a bleed screw on the radiator (which has to be taken off completely). If not, the thermostat could be sticking?

Can't help with a diagnosis but I got a replacement for my S3 from Euro Car Parts for £40,6 years ago. Part no.201560305 cross dowater pump Ford Scorpio/Sierra. The biggest problem I had and I'm sure many others have had is getting the bolts out in one piece, use PLENTY releasing/penetrating oil and take it steady. Good luck.

My first thought would have been Euro Car Parts as well but Check your pressure cap first. If the spring has become weak you'd get the same problem. thumbup

And where do i find this fancy bit of kit and, more importantly, how easy is it to fit?

Not as easy as fitting a new pressure cap laugh

I’d also try the bleed screw on the top of the radiator. I got my water pump from Burton Power - can’t remember what I paid for it though.

The water pump is a fairly basic thing, no fine tolerences to wear, if it's going round it should be pumping.

Very rarely an impellor can break up or become detached from the shaft but 99.9% of the time it is the seal that fails, letting coolant pass to wash the grease out the bearings so they fail and you get a visible leak!

Thanks Mike, There's definately no leak (until it overheats and then it it's through the normal expansion tank outlet pipe)...so that looks like it rules out the actual pump.

Going to try the radiator bleed and check the cap today...if it still overheats (even with the manual fan on) then my next thing will be to replace the thermostat (have checked this previously and it looked okay, but you never know).

It's the fact that it's not doing it all the time...seems to be okay just running to temp on the drive, but when actually driving on the road is when it does it...and even then not every time...

So, if i need to replace the thermostat (even just to rule out an issue there)...

1) where do i get the correct thermostat kit from?
2) Once the housing is off what's the best way to get the old thermostat out & new one in?

Many thanks in advance

So...it does look like it was an air pocket/lack of fluid...have managed to top the system up quite a bit and now have fluid coming out of the bleed valve smile

Have run up to temp and the fan kicked in & cooled back down to the fan going off...ran this sequence twice and no issues.

Will take it on a test run when I next need to go in to the office & see how we go.

As always thanks for all your help everyone thumbup

Cheers

If the system has been drained and just topped up without vacuum bleeding, it isn't unusual to have air coming out weeks later.
