oil temperature?
Discussion
I'm thinking I may need a thermostatically controlled oil cooler. I've just put the car on the road and after a 10 mile run at 70 on a motorway the oil temperature was a generally steady 115 C and water just over 90 C. I've not pushed on in it yet.
The car is a Jag 3.0 engine TVR but I don't think that matters.

I use a remote oil cooler with a thermostatically controlled sandwich plate on mine, although if your cooling system has plenty of spare capacity an oil/water cooler gives the benefit of quicker warmup - the laminova ones look very nice, but I haven't used them myself.
I'm going to purchase a thermostatically controlled cooler on. Have you seen the cost of the laminova over £300 Hi Mick...
Having done all of 2mins research... Isn't 115oC pretty much spot on for optimum engine oil temp.
All a stat will do is stop the through the cooler flow until the engine warms up. In other words, it will shorten the warm up time. But not change the 'once open' running temp.

Hi Pete - how did you plumb this off the engine? I've been looking at fitting something similar for a while but mainly to mount the oil filter remotely to make oil changes easier. I can't see how to route the pipes from the take-off plate that goes on the oil filter housing to clear the exhaust 'Y'-pipe.How did you do it?

mine does not have a cooler at the mo, just a remote filter. The thermostatic plate would only allow flow through the cooler once up to it's temp (either 80 or 92 degC) at the filter. It would shut the cooler down at a lower temp (I have yet to find out what this is) The oil temp gauge sender is in the engine block so more accurate.
Hi Mick...
Ah, I see. I worked t'other way round.
IE. To install the cooler as part of my original engine swop. No t-stat at the moment, so eventually I will be checking for over cooling.
Here are some of my bedtime thinking on the oil temp concern in general...
The Jag S type only had a water/oil cooler/heater at the oil filter. These are 50/50 in heating the oil during warm up, and a bit of cooling once up to temp.
Being as the engine hasn't got a brain, it doesn't know it's now sitting in a tvr !
So assuming Jag/Ford designed the engine correctly, it should run at its design temperatures, +/- a bit depending on the local environment and usage. My alloy water rad in capacity is about the same as the Jag one, air flow will be about the same especially at standstill with the fan running. So I'm reasonably happy that even at full chat (road use) in either car, the engine will handle it.
So I think fitting a cooler, should be just a safety net.
The above just being my personal thoughts of course.... I could be wrong.
Don't get panic buying
