Whilst going to tackle resetting the tappets I'm going to replace the tacky looking rocker covers. Iv'e picked up a pair of good s/h ones and have cleaned them to bare metal, normally I would simply primer them and spray Holts Chrome colour on them but knowing the high temperature under the bonnet will this suffice this time.
Would I need a high temperature paint? has anyone done this before- perhaps you would tell me what you used. (I believe the original colour on the covers was "Silver" -hence me using chrome as the nearest to original)
Thanks in advance.

You will almost certainly need to use high temperature paint. Those rocker covers get quite hot, and normal paint probably won't last very long.

Hi

I painted mine with Silver Hammerite smooth and they've been fine for almost 2 years now, no flaking or effects of heat... and of course stops the exterior rust !

How long does smoothrite take to cure? Is it simply a matter of whipping them off, wire brushing them down, painting them, leave overnight and whack them back on?

Thanks,

Mark

Be very careful to make sure that they are painted in a dry atmos. as otherwise the paint with give you a white/grey bloom and they'll look shit.

Best to have them shot blasted before hand. Did mine with Smoothrite with no issues.

I had my Essex V6 covers on my Taimar Powder Coated, 30,000 miles and 50 (!) track days later they were still fine. They were powder coated inside and out

My Rocker Covers were a Dirty Grey with a mixture of rust thrown in to boot. Decided to steer away from the original miserable colour though, and didn't fancy any flash colours. So, decided to do mine in gloss black high heat paint from a motor factor’s. They look great and a cheaper option at only £5 for the can.

I etch-primed mine first (not cheap but probably the best base coat you can get for bare metal) then sprayed them with a black stove paint which gives a nice "sheen" finish. Unfortunately as I was replacing the fuel rail (V8S) they picked up a spurt of petrol and it took the stove paint off! So off that one will come again for a second coat!
