Twin swirl pot finally fitted !

Last June Shaun made me up one of his stainless steel twin swirl pot set ups .
Well , finally got round to fitting it and all I can say is its lovely , some of the nicest welding and fabrication I've seen .
Not cheap but definitely worth it in my opinion , makes the original swirl pot look like junk.
No connection, just very happy .

but always wondered why TVR fitted swirl pots whereas other (Ford V6) manufacturers installations don't.
I believe the main reason being no radiator top vent back to coolant header tank. I purchased my S1 as a write off with no engine/box so I fitted a V6 cosy with it's radiator, I piped up as it was in the donor Granada and ran it for 5 years ok. I have now fitted a Jaguar V6 and again not fitted swirl pots and it is fine including a rolling road session - over 240bhp and no over heating.

I can't for the life of me work out how that operates .. what's the function of the second tank ? it *appears* to be an overflow tank, but the hose is in the top so any hot water displaced into the tank2 cannot get back into tank 1 on cooling. What have I missed ? Does the pipe into tank 2 go all the way into the bottom of the tank ?
Also how do the caps work ? you can't have a pressure cap on tank 2 because the tank would never fill, so it must be a plain cap on that tank and pressure cap on tank 1 ? but then no displaced coolant gets drawn back into tank 1 on cooling …

Hi , as you look at the picture , the right hand tank is the swirl pot , with feeds to the pump / block etc , the left tank is the system overflow bottle , on the rear of the swirl pot neck is the feed to the overflow bottle which is fed to the bottom of the overflow bottle , the overflow bottle neck pipe ,red in the picture is the vent to the road .
As for the caps , MY swirl pot cap is a fill only cap , not pressurised , and the overflow cap is a 15 psi pressure cap .
I can't say what others are doing with the caps but this system has worked for me with no overheating even in heavy traffic.

Nice job! Shaun is a master craftsman.
On my twin tank setup I have the pressure cap on the expansion tank. It doesn't really matter too much which tank you put the cap on apart from making sure that if you choose to put the cap on the swirl tank it must be the type which allows coolant to bleed back into the swirl tank from the expansion tank as the system cools. Although having said that, given you have a sight tube on the side of the expansion tank, it might be best to put your pressure cap on the swirl tank.
Mine was one of the early twin-tank arrangements (I think Phillpot got there first) and the design has been refined on each new one to this point. I got the swirl tank from ACT in 2010 and asked Shaun to make me an expansion tank to match in 2014.This was my design in 2014...
...and this is how it worked with Shaun's design of bracket which gave a stiffer mount...
Fozzy's looks like the best design and it's hard to see how it can be improved from here. But I'm sure Shaun will think of something

Hi v8s4me, yes I'm very happy with the set up , regarding the caps , I'll keep them as they are as the system was working fine before I changed the bottles so don't see why it shouldn't now , it's pretty much a straight swap bar less hosing and location .
The bottles are attached to some nice thick stainless plate , over 1/4" thick , so I'm happy with the rigidity and it made fitting easier .
It also got rid of the manky old header bottle above the oil filter , so much easier access for that too , win-win.
