I too have recently removed mine (S3), but done as I was fitting new ones.
I removed all nuts/washers & the bulb units.
Then hit the back of each cluster with a big rubber hammer, fully expecting lots of flying plastic, but each unit broke free of any damage.
On closer inspection a couple of the threaded inserts had cracked plastic.
Although in theory they were already loose, so maybe the plastic in that area was already cracked !
Here's a thought, something to try...
See if you can slide some dental floss around the cluster, then with a sawing action see if it'll cut through the silicone.
My old ones are still usable, shout up if the unthinkable happens.

If you can prise up one end slightly (very gently) use a scalpel to gradually cut into the silicone. Take your time and be very careful. The correct Ford OEM seals are available on eBay and seal just as well as the silicone. They did on mine anyway.

While you have the light units out why not replace those crappy connectors? All you need to do is connect a wire to each terminal (solder or small crimp spade - I used spades) and then connect into the loom with a new multi pin connector...

This mod solves all the problems with the rear lights.
