Traveling into work this am and one of my headlight bezel's has decided to attack me at speed
It all happened in an instant .... bezel appears then all of a sudden it's dived into the windscreen trying to attack me.
The self tapper is still in place but the lug at the bottom has sheared.
Replaced the steering bush/ bearing in the bulkhead those bolts are a real pain unles you have monkey arms.
Fitted all back together but what is stopping the bush that the steering shaft fits into from pushing through the hole in the bulkhead ?
I have replaced in exactly the same way all the parts, so is it ok or is there something missing ?

You have'nt fitted the new one the wrong way round have you?
The bearing fits in the footwell at the bottom of the column, it would need a pretty big whole around your column to let it pass through to the engine bay side!
Mine was originally fitted the wrong side and although confusing I had to just ignore the fitting of the old one when I replaced it.
Mole grips lodged between the pedals helped do the nuts up tight from the otherside.

Hi Tim, the bearing is on the inside of the footwell and won't travel as it's clamped between the bulkhead and the boss. But the nylon bush that fits inside the bearing will travel through the hole in the bulkhead and it's this I'm a little concerned about.
On the bezel front any ideas on how to secure these better ?

Been racking my brain as it was a while ago I did mine but from memory there were three parts.The nylon bush.nylon boss and the metal bearing race.
Dose'nt the nylon bush have to be 'hammered' into the bearing or fitted in a vice? ie. it ain't going to come out again!
Is it this you think might work loose and slide down the column, or am I completely being a numpty and missing your point?
As for the Chrome bezels around the headlamps,mine both spin round as I have no sign of a fixing left on either.I reckon I would put a few dabs of silicone on parts of the headlamp rim that won't foul the fixing or adjustment screws when the rings returned.Should hold it on firmly but allow you to get it off again.

Thanks Neil, the nylon bush has a lip which on my car is visible from the wheel arch but from your photo's it looks like it should be fitted the other way round. Looks like another grovel in the footwell to turn it around. At least I don't have to remove the housing
Thanks Tim for the advice on fitting the bezel. I have a mini one which has a hole through the side but I would have to change the bowl might do that as well.
I managed to get a lower steering UJ from tvrcarparts.com yet to see the part but I would recommend them as Neil knew straight away what part I needed and the fact that there are more than one type

The nylon bush should be pushed onto the steering shaft from the outside. The lip on the bush stops it going in too far. There should then be a lock washer (triangular hole) that is pushed over the shaft to lock the bush in place.
As previously stated the bush is bstard tight fit and shouldn't really ever move.

I think by definition with TVR, if there are 2 possible ways to fit things then you are equally likely to find both. could mention pressure caps and swirl tanks here but on second thoughts..
Mine was upgraded to the bearing+bush type around '90 and the service notice from TVR said 'do it this way'.
Mechanically, either way is valid. The important point is that the bush is captive on the shaft.
The lock washer in question is forced along the shaft up to the bush and stops it moving.
