Where to buy a rack?

Hi, I am looking at rebuilding my rack, but suspicious of wear in the gear and rack itself, which is not DIY rapairable (I would guess). Tower View are now quoting £175 plus VAT and carriage (£225!). David Gerald only offer a 'factory rebuild', doesn't sound cheap. Anyone got a cheaper option?

Hi Nic

It really depends on what is wrong with it...And why it needs refurbing...

Having stripped mine down and replaced the Nylon bush... There is not much to them... If the actual gears of rack teeth themselves are $hagged then you might have a problem... Bearings and bushes can be replaced, from standard parts of have the machined up..

Cheers Dave. I read in an earlier link that the base rack is Chevette, with some Minor adjustments (sorry for pun). A Chevette rack is £25!! Is the TVR name affecting the price of a rebuild? What about buying a £25 rack and using the rack and pinion parts? Maybe worth a try.

As I say it really depends on whar is knackered...

Fellow PHer 'esmyth' has had a bush from me and has fully restored his rack back in Feb AFAIK...

He sourced the bearings locally.

I have furnished David Batty with a few of the bushes as well, so it might be worth giving him a call to see what he would charge...!

Hi guys - the bearings are standard 6202 I think off the top of my head cost about £5 - easy to source almost anywhere. What you might struggle with as Dave says is the nylon bushes at the ends of the shaft - Dave kindly gave me one to replace mine but you would need to make them up.

Hi Dave - replaced everything in sight but not still 100% happy. Have put it back on car but the track rods are touching the bottom wishbone on full lock in both directions. I do n't remember this happening before and am certain everything is back together properly - it could be the new AVO shocks are not adjusted right but this still does not seem right. Any ideas ?

Do you remember any lock stops on your rack to limit the amount of turning ?

Hi, mine touch when jacked up, but not when sat on the floor. I don't think there are any stops?

I don't recall any stops on the rack... Only the usual track rod ends...

I took my car to Micheldever for a full alignment ceck & setup after I replaced the rack....

Quote "'k'me that's a mile out" was the mechanics words...

And I thought I'd put everything back exactly the same way..

thanks guys - I do not think there any stops - I reckon when I get the ride height sorted and the tracking done it will be sorted. Will let you know.

Hi, alignment is an absolute piece of cake in your own garage, using only three bits of wood, a spirit level and a tape measure. I can get it true to 1mm easily (camber and tracking), and have never paid for alignment even when sprinting and hillclimbing. If anyone is interested I will do an explaination.
