Thought some members here might like to see a snap of our S1, which is finally back on the road....

It hadn't been used for a while and was suffering sticky clutch hydraulics, so went into the workshop for a refresh... whereupon we started to find more and more issues to address.... a common story I am sure. Still, with everything done and a new alloy radiator installed, it should be good for a few years to come. My thanks to those on here who have offered both advice and surplus parts to help with questions and the various jobs that have been done (notably Mr Phillips for the fuse holders) - hugely appreciated! It's good to be back out on the road again - I'd forgotten how much fun this little car was!

I would welcome any advice on exhausts.... the one currently fitted has always been noisy... but it's just TOO much now and I'd like to tone it down somewhat. Are there any S1 exhausts available 'off the shelf' or do I need to get one made?

Looking good.

I had the rear & mid section replaced by a stainless steel type (back in 2001 tho), didnt have any issues back then. Is exhaust based on Ford parts like the engine?

One of the few things I disliked about the car was the way the exhaust hung below the chassis & was always scraping on speed bumps, & I was a lot slimmer back then!

Good luck with your search.

I replaced mine with a complete sytem from ACT (S3)

Not cheap, but very pleased with it.

System for S1;

The ACT system on the S1 does quieten it down a fair bit. Still sounds nice, but deeper.

ACT is a pretty safe bet unless you have a Custom Exhaust Centre near by?

I got my stainless exhaust system from JP Exhausts, who are now part of Cobra Sports.
Rumour has it that JP supplied ACT, how true that is, is anyone's guess.
Very pleased with the system, great sound without being deafening.

Some good suggestions there, thank you. I can't find any pictures of the ACT system to see how many silencers it includes. I'm also not sure about the downpipes and whether these will fit.... my alternator is now on the passenger side of the engine with the original downpipe modified accordingly.
The car had a stainless system built to fit around 15 years ago, so there is nothing structurally wrong with the exhaust.... it's just too noisy. I'd like to be able to get it down to track day sound limits in an ideal world - not particularly because we want to track the car (although we might!) but more because it offers a sensible and measurable threshold of noise that shouldn't be anti-social in the real world....
Does anyone track their S1 and have a compliant exhaust? or are you having to add track day silencing?
It looks like I do have a PowerFlow dealer pretty close, so that might be an option....

Don't know where you are geographically, but a good friend recommends Torque Technique at Salisbury, for a custom system: Mick Poulton built a custom system for his Spartan (it would have to be!) and he's very happy with it.

Mick quoted me for a custom-built system for my S3, and his price (fitted) came out (surprise!) the same as ACT's for supply only. I don't need a custom-fit, and I'd rather do the fitting myself. But for a modified system I think he'd be very good.

Got any photo's of what's on the car?

Sounds (boom boom) like you just need a silencer repacking or replacing with a more effective one?

The ACT one is a replica of the original. Looks pretty much the same, though the tailpipes need tweaking to get them to sit closer to the body, ideally. But yeah, it'll fit the original downpipes, as per the original one.

Last chap I knew who tracked his S1 had to stick extra cans on the back of an ACT system, and they're quieter than the originals!
