My tube of PU-18 was solid (and why not? it was two years old.)
But I used a tube of grey CT1 sealant/adhesive that I found, instead.
That had been recommended to me as a petrol gauge / tank sealant, for which it was totally useless. But it fixed the window trim perfectly, and the excess cleaned off beautifully with Wonder Wipes: two product endorsements right there!
And the fuel tank? Blue Hylomar, every time.

I certainly wouldn't choose or recommend CT1 to seal a sender unit but given time to cure it might work?"with a food related accreditation. CT1 will not shrink, crack or deteriorate and can be applied on wet surfaces, even underwater. ... CT1 Structural Sealant has a fantastic chemical resistance e.g. fuel, oil, solvents and alkaline thus ensuring the life of a repair on installation".
Does fuel include petrol ?

I gave it 48 hours to cure. A week after putting fuel in the tank it was leaking. When removed, it had gone hard and crumbly.I tried about 5 different mastics/sealants without success, but I was sent to see a Landie expert who put me straight, and gave me a tube of Blue Hylomar. No more trouble.
I would not recommend to use PU glue. It is used to glue windscreen on modern cars.... As you wrote, It's pretty impossible to remove without damage the paint.
Mines are glued with neoprene glue. If both sides are well prepared (not glue on sh..t), and waiting time respected before assembling It sticks well enough. Yes, maybe I will have to re-glue them in 10 years..... not a huge problem.
Silicone sealant/glue is also a very good proposition.
