Don't even think about a Roll Bar if you just want to make it "look good" without incorporating the necessary stiffening plates and Anchor points. A cosmetic pretty looking Roll Bar is far more dangerous than not having one - yes it could be expensive to do it properly.

As Harry says I've recently had one fitted to my car. There are a number af companies that will supply rollbars but the best one I found which is a solid race approved roll bar was the one from TowerView. They are the sole suppliers for the bar which is made for them by Rollcentre Racing (Martin Shorts company).
It comes as standard in a smart black finish and incorporates new upper seat belt mounts (belts are smoother to use) and fixing points for harnesses.
It goes through the parcel shelf and floor behind the seats and bolts to the chassis. Although I guess you could fit it yourself I paid Tower View to fit mine, they did a great job - very neat and retrimmed the carpet piping where it fits round the bar. With the roof up the bar sits just under the fixed hoop of the targa and you can still use the interior light.
Everyone who's seen it has commented on how neat it looks and that it suits the car. I've not got a decent photo with it yet, there are some taken at the Berks car show taken by other club members and I've got one somewhere I'll dig out.
The fitted cost was about £600 about half of which was the cost of the bar (price a bit vague as I had their seat mounting bars fitted at the same time.
Harry,
Sorry, couldn't make VW this time due to other family commitments. I hope to meet you again soon - I did meet Shnozz last week though.
Cheers,
JSG.

I've been thinking about this too, but was mildly alarmed by Steve bible comment about it being particularly expensive due to chassis welding gubbins on the S's.
Guess I'll just have to not let Smifffy drive it and it'll stay the right way up
Twas true when the first edition was written but the second edition has the details on the Tower View one including descrptions of how it is fitted. The details are also on www.t-v-r-services.co.uk
It also stiffens the chassis and improves the handling.
steve
You should have said, you could have had a look round mine at VW. I'll see if I can get some pics of it over the weekend. It's the Tower View one, which has been carefully packaged to maximise head room and seat room, retain use of the original seat belt, get the rear stays in the ideal position for a harness, and minimise the obstruction of the rear view (although it does still cut the view down). Personally I can't say I've noticed any increase in chassis stiffness or handling (which was already perfect, but hey, we've been here before ) but it makes me feel a lot lot happier hooning around with a harness on. Main downside is slightly reduced rear visibility, and a little more noise into the cockpit. It also makes a handy camera mount ...

Thanks everyone for the info, it's okay I've never thought that roll bars ever 'looked good', safety is the only issue.I would be interested in seeing any other images (PH). I assume, JSG, that the existing belt anchor points are moved and operate much better in the new position and I think the seat mounting bars are a good idea, I'll phone Tower View tomorrow and get a price to do the same for me.

Hi seb,
I got mine for safety rather than looks. The belt anchor points are moved, I'm back in the UK now so I'll try and post some more pics tommorrow.
Seat bars are very good - I'm a lard arse so it gives peace of mind.
Cheers,
John.
