1) How far back is the handbrake cable adjuster - do I need to be looking at the gearbox end or the diff end?
2) Which side of the 'box is the electronic speedo sensor on?
(The following relate to tappetty sound under load which I suspect to be tappets or oil starvation ..
I'm assuming that being non-cat 2.9 I don't have hydraulic tappets..)
3) Rocker covers: are the gaskets re-usable cork/rubber or will I need a new set after removing the covers?
4) How to verify adequate oil circulation here, aside of starting the engine and covering the bay with oil?
5) Tappet/rocker clearances/tolerances?

Left or right. I can't remember but look for a plastic bit with some cables coming out of it.

Good idea as leaks are often caused by reusing gaskets.
4) How to verify adequate oil circulation here, aside of starting the engine and covering the bay with oil?
OIl pressure is a good one but look for oil flowing over the rocker arm assembly. Looking through the oil filler or breather might work.
5) Tappet/rocker clearances/tolerances?
I'll have a look tonight. I've got them somewhere!

I think the red one would be the speedo connection.

When I was working on my bikes, I found that Kellogs mage a range of gaskets, once I was allowed to play with the scissors. OT: Those Kellogs' jigsaws were crap, none of the bits inside fitted together and looked nothing like the picture on the front.

1) The handbrake adjuster is located in the transmission tunnel. Plastic knob thing. Access can sometimes ne had through the tray as this lifts out after the 2 screws which hold the transmission tunnel cover have beend undone by the seats.
2)The electronic speedo sensor is located on the nearside of the box at the rear. It is a push fit unit and is quite near the back.
3) I have a spare set you are welcome too. Email me your address and you can have them. Stick them to the rocker covers and not the block as it is easier to remove the sticky stuff from them at a later date than the heads.
NOTE - When replacing the rocker cover gaskets it is often necessary (advisable) to put an extra squidge of sealant at the meeting point of the inlet mainfold and the heads as this is often at a different level and the gaskets do not take up the difference. This often causes oil leaks which transfer over the back of the engine and makes you think something worse is going on. Also be very careful not to overtighten these nuts as you can easily split the gaskets.
4) The only way to check this would be to run the engine without covers. There are no additional oil spray bars. I will email you a photograph of the heads minus the covers so you can see what I mean. Only other option would be run the engine and then quickly whip off the covers to check how much oil there is in there and how hot it was etc etc...
5)Valve/Tappet clearance (no you do not have hydraulic ones) should be adjusted at temp between 20-40c. NOT HOT and NOT COLD. It can make a lot of difference. I struggle to get these right and be very very careful as it makes an awful lot of difference. Additionally the tappets WEAR and often the valve stem will pass a small fraction into the tappet. A standard feeler gauge will not measure...so be a little sympathetic....but not too much.
Inlet - 0.35mm
Exhaust - 0.40mm
NOTE - If you are looking at the front of the engine the cylinder on your left at the front is No 1. On you right it is No 4. As follows

On number 1 cylinder the exhaust is the first tappet and then the same for the remainding cylinders on that bank.
On number 4 cylinder the inlet is the first tappet and then the same for the remainding cylinders on that bank.
It is quite obvious when you look at the inlet and exhaust manifolds but I have heard of it being done wrong...

Loking at the picture the sensor on the left is next to the gear linkage and is the reverse light switch.
The electrical connector with the wire on it is the speed sensor and this is push fit. It will not peeee oil everywhere. Take it out carfully and you can put it back with everything you took out. Very durable IME..

The easiest way to do this job is to reverse your car up some ramps. This will have the effect of raising the switch even firther above the oil level. Don't know the answers to your other questions I'm afraid.

Wouldn't be at all suprised, I never adjusted them in my time with the car and they do wander off in time..
I wouldn't try and scare yourself on oil starvation, the car has always had great oil pressure and you'd find that with oil starvation (due to a poor pump or low oil levels) you'd hear it more at low revs than at high revs anyway.. anyone here with an early landrover will vouch for this..
