I can buy a used gearbox from a ford sierra 1,8td, can I fit it in my TVR S1 (as I have problems with the 3th gear when changing gear from 4th to 3th gear) or should it be cheaper to repair my gearbox

No.

The first motion (or input) shaft will be shorter and I think ratio's are different which may limit how many of the internals could be swapped if you fancied stripping them both down and using best bits from each to build one good box

If I were you, I wouldn't try. The first question is : Is it a T9 gearbox ? I think it is. The second question is : Is it the same variation ? I think it's not, the front cover is different, but maybe you can switch with your genuine box. The third question is : Is it the same gearbox ratios ? And I'm pretty sure it's not.... diesel and petrol engine has very different torque curve shape, so they have very different requirements in term of gearbox ratios frown

You can find some useful information about the T9 gearbox here : http://www.type9gearbox.co.uk
