So I am booked in to replace all 4 tyres on my S2, but seems to be mixed opinion around whether I should bother. As stated previously on this site they are around 12 years old, good tread and no signs of cracking etc, but Initial feedback has been I should change them not only for safety reasons, but it will result in a vast improvement in ride quality.

What’s general consensus on this? Am I wasting my money? If no real reason to change I will spend my cash on other improvements

Currently set to change to Avon Brand

12 years old? Change them or live (hopefully) to regret it.

At 12 years old, the rubber will have gone hard and the level of grip will be much reduced. You will notice a massive improvement with new tyres.

Mine were 12 years old, looked fine. But on the way back from my first MOT they were lethal on a dry, slow roundabout. It felt as though the car was 'up on tiptoes'.

The rubber was glass-hard. Other tyres may be made of better rubber (although mine were a reputable make), or the conditions of storage may be important. I wouldn't risk it.

By all means, try it yourself: a road test is the only way. But be careful!

Now on Dunlops as recommended by many here: a lovely drive!

They say 10 years regardless of condition and tread. if unsure.

To confirm the age of your tyres, you need to check the DOT code on the sidewall, it is a code stamped on one side of the tyre only. For tyres manufactured since the beginning of 2000, it is a four digit code. E.g 4809, this would denote week 48 in the year 2009. If there are only 3 numbers then the tyre could be from the 80's or if there are 3 digits with a triangle, this would be from the 90's.

Hope this helps

Changed tires on my s3 last spring before the Monaco tour. Old set was only 7 years old and less then 20000km on them.
Put Dunlop blue response on And have not regretted the choice smile

I was also thinking of changing mine. Just checked the code and they are 14 years old! I think I will order 4 tried and tested Blue Responses. The cheapest supplier I found was National Tyres at £80.72 each.

I agree with everything mentall has said.

The tyres that were on my car were about 15 years old when I took ownership. I thought the riding like I was sat on a brick and the back end of the car being very lively on roundabouts coupled with very heavy steering were just characteristics of a S Series (having never driven one before).

A full set of Dunlop Blue Response tyres about a year into ownership completely transformed the car.

Do it, I can pretty much guarantee you won’t regret it - even if just from a safety perspective.

Thanks all, seems changing the tyres is the right thing to do. Only question left, is Dunlop seems to be the popular choice. Currently I am looking at AVON AV7’s. These get excellent reviews and are low dB rating and good grip in dry and wet. Anyone any experience of AVON?

I've been looking at Avons for my V8S - when you say AV7s do you mean ZV7s?.
Black circles are knocking them out for about £63 each fitted (205 60 15 size) but they have a 10% off flash sale ending this evening (Monday 25th Feb) so £57 each.

I've just obtained authority from my wife and I'm going to order a set of four to replace my ancient Bridgestones.

Hopefully nobody will pipe up and tell me how rubbish Avons are just after I've placed my order.
(I have no connection with Blackcircles - I just happened to be looking at prices this morning and saw their sale).

nono I assume poor DB rating means they don't squeal properly.

I've always thought the db rating for any given tyre was a bit academic because a lot depends on actual road conditions, tyre pressure and suspension. In any event, totally academic on an 'S' being driven properly, ie with the roof off laugh

TODAY ONLY: Black Circles offer Dunlop Sport Blu Response 205/60 R15 V (91) fitted at £83.24 less 10%: that's £74.92 each.
Enter FLASH10 at the online checkout.

Other suppliers are available; I have no connection with Black Circles and their local fitters, except as a very satisfied customer over 15 years.

So, what’s the verdict? Does it feel better and was it worth it?

MOT passed, no advisory’s. Tyres are a definite improvement on ride quality and ease of steering.

One thing I did notice is front drivers upper ball joint boot probably needs replacing. Any ideas on best place to purchase?
