Cold passenger

Out and about this weekend in my S3. Went to Donningtion with the Staffs TVR Club and had a great time. Very friendly bunch and I recommend anyone in the area to get involved.
Anyway, back to the plot. Although it was sunny, the temperature was abit on the chilly side with roof down. So went to put fan on to give my passenger (and my hands) a little heat....and nothing. So my first question is where do I get a switch from / how much / and can a complete novice like myself fit it?
Second question is, as we were going along a strange noise came from the passenger door. When I looked across the little knob you push in to lock the door had decided to play hide and seek in the door, along with lots of other metal bits. Anyone ever had this before, and if so is it something that could be tackled by the engineeringly challenged?

Can't quite see how the lock can come adrift without taking the latch with it, but either way it sounds like you need to get inside the door and screw it back together. The good news is once you've got the door lining off it's all relatively accessible and hopefully it will be pretty obvious what bits should go where. Also you'll find all the nuts and washers etc safely caught in the bottom of the door, and the grease and general crud in there will have protected them from the worst effects of the water that they'll swilling around in. The bad news is that taking the door lining off can be a real pain in the proverbial.
The basic drill is carefully ease out the poppers round the ouside of the door, undo the screw at the back of the door, another in the interior door handle recess, the third one is a sod to get at, it is at the highest point at the front of the 'arm rest' affair. The only access is by pulling the ashtray out, and removing the speaker. This gives you two sets of finger tips onto a long M6 bolt, if this is the first time it has been taken off it has probably got the thread bunged up with resin and glue, but will come off if you persevere. When you drop the spanner, it will be almost completely inaccessible at the bottom of the door, but at least all the grease and cr*p in there will protect it from the water.
Can you tell how much fun this job is? Best pack the wife and kids off for the afternoon and get the beers lined up for afterwards.

The S3 uses a switch that I was told came from a TR7 so Rimmer Bros should be able to supply one. Does the fan work at either speed position? It would be worth checking that it's not a fuse or wiring prob if not.

As Pete says - major pig of a job. I've done this a few times now and got quite good at it.
I found that the only way to get at the top nut was to use a small socket set through the speaker hole, it is fiddly and the worst bit is when the nut drops into the bottom of the door when you are trying to put it all back together. To get round this I used wingnuts instead of the usual nuts which means you can undo and replace by hand in future - much easier.

Thank you both very much indeed. I will 'get my hands dirty' this weekend. This will be the first job I have had to do on my S3 since buying it last year. It has been a great first year of TVR ownership and can whole heartedly recommend the S as a perfect car for both the TVR novice and anyone interested in a car with bags of character with lots of open top fun to be had.
I will let you know how I get on with the door, and I will also take a look at the fuses for the fan switch to see if that is the problem.

You could try Robsport International for a TR7 fan switch. I think the part you're after might be ZKC4011S (second page if you do a search for 'fan'), in which case it'd be £1.00
for a secondhand unit (plus VAT and P&P I'd guess). Best to speak to them to confirm the exact part though! >> Edited by rrouse on Saturday 28th September 20:53
For what its worth, I had the same problem, and ordered a replacement switch from Rimmer, but when I stripped out the offending fan switch, I found that it was possible to disassemble it and clean all the contacts so that it worked perfectly, which was just as well as the switch from Rimmer bros was nothing like the original. I should add that my car is an S4, so I'm not sure if the S3 is the same. Hope this helps.
