Dear all,

I have found two brand new black MX5 seats from a 2018 car (model 2019). Will they fit in an S3?

These are not the Recaros but look nice in black leather with red stitching.

How about mounting height? Will I hit the steering wheel with my legs? If so, can they be lowered by changing the runners

Kind regards
//Rob

He is talking about the ND car, the last one, completely different from all previous models. Not sure he could find any help on Internet.

I saw one in the car park today.. seats “look” like the mk3 onea i have.. mk3 fit no priblems and are even aysnc in terms of side boulster to fit the narrow car better.

Best measure some to be sure though.

Hi,

I did measure the 2019 seats at a dealer and they should fit.

I probably will have to do new mounts but that is ok. The are comfy and in leather. Now I just need to get a roll bar fitted. And maybe re-install the blower...

The seats I found are brand new from someone building a race car.

I'm looking forward to get them installed. -Will revert with pictures

Hi,

Good news. I will go get my brand-new MX-5 Mk4 2019 seats in a week or so. I hope they fit as easy yours did.

Damian, I saw from an old thread that you posted some pictures on you mounting and what new holes you had to drill. The thread is still there but the pictures are gone. Can you post them again in this thread so I can see what I need to do?

https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=12...

Did you hook up the heating in them? Did yours have airbags? These do but I plan on leaving them disconnected. They also have some speakers mounted but no sure if it would be any use to connect them.

Kind regards

Hi,

New MX5 Mk4 seats home.

DamianS3 (or anyone else fitting MX4 seats in an S), how did you mount the seats? Did you keep the front angled mounts and if so, how did you do on the bottom side? Angled washer?

There is also a (guiding) pin located behind the angled front mount on the original MX5 runner. Did you keep that and drilled a new hole on the floor for it? It can be seen in the picture with a plastic collar just behind the angled mount to go into some kind of “guide” hole in the floor of the MX5.

Keep or saw off?

Kind regards

I can't see how you would be able to fit them with that bracket on the front of the runners. I think you'll have to cut it off and either drill through the runner to fit the bolt through the floor or bolt a flat piece of bar to the front of the runner and bolt through that into the floor.

I fitted a pair of earlier MX5 seats to Tasmin and cut off the locating peg to avoid drill more holes in the floor than necessary.

Agree with v8s4me, saw off the bracket and put the seat in the car to see how it sits. Too high or not ; the runners position compared to fixing holes etc.... That will help you to decide if you can use the seat runners or if you need to remove all the seat lifting mechanism and weld simple runners directly to the seat subframe. Be really careful with the airbags ....

My guess is that these new style seats will be higher than the earlier ones because of all the gubbins underneath. Hopefully not too high for you though.

Dont get the saw out until you trial fit them.

I procrastinated for ages and just bit the bullit one day.

The back holes line up, the locating pins then dropped in the existing front holes perfect and i just drilled new front mounts through the seat bracket done smile.

Subsiquently track v road modified the driver side to drop it an inch or so.

It was way easier than i could have imagined.

Cheers

Brilliant.

Did you drill-out / remove the angled part at the front of the original Mazda Runners and just drill a new mounting hole through the front of the runner? -And a corresponding hole in the TVR floor to bolt it down? Or did you keep the angled part in place? Please see picture above.

Did you connect the seat heating? If so, how did you go about connecting that? My seats do have the heater controller under the driver seat, but the control electronics is probably still in the donor car.

There seem not to be an ordinary thermostat but a temperature sensitive resistor in the seat itself so there is need for some electronics to avoid cooking the less noble parts while driving

Kind regards

Will remove the airbags if i go to the trimmer.

A bit tired and somewhat irritated I can now confirm that MX5 Mk4 seats, at least 2019, does not fit in the S3.

Stupid me had already taken out the airbags and seat belt mounts… Now I need to put them back to sell them.

First of all, they are too high with about 1”, the targa bow do hit them. They are also wider and barely fit in width. And the runners are wider.

The runners should be fine with some fiddling, but the height of the back kills it. I have taken a close look at the bottom and there is really now way to lower them enough without rebuilding the entire seat.

As these are brand new leather seats it is better to sell them to a MX5 owner and keep searching….

However, they looked really nice in the car and that sucks.

Oh well, life goes on. And now we know.

Never got seats with mine, tried several from jag to Mazda, in the end I found a pr of lotus Esprit S2 fit well, low and narrow bit with plenty of support, lots of clearance for the hoop. Mine just need a re trim as they are a bit tatty. Low runners with 4 bolt fixings.

They were probably supplied by the same company that supplied TVR and may even have used the same frame.
