My clutch appears to be dragging making first and reverse very hard and noisy to engage.
I believe the master cylinder is the original, so I am proposing to replace both cylinders, (slave replaced a couple of years ago) and use a braided flexi hose between the two.
My questions are:
The slave cylinder was replaced with a land rover unit bought from Rimmer Bros and originally worked fine
Is the master cylinder the corresponding Land Rover unit?
Where can I get a flexi hose made up?
I will also check that the actuating rod is ok and is not pushing through the clutch arm.
Any other thoughts?
Thanks Andy J

Do you know how old the fluid is? Unless it's fairly new, bleeding and flushing would be my first step because old fluid can be very spongy. Also hold the clutch pedal on the floor for ten minutes and see whether the slave creeps back up - that suggests you have a leak somewhere.

Hi

there are plenty of threads on Pistonheads regarding the master cylinders - gooooogle Pistonheads TVR S master cylinder

The S used a small number of different cylinders during the production run although all are 22.2mm dia pistons.

Isn't that brakes? Clutch m/c is 0.75" (19mm)

Might not be the cheapest but I believe Pirtek can make you a hose?

I've just had a braided clutch hose made up by HEL, £25 delivered. Probably best to fit a new landrover master and slave and get a hose made to fit.

It'll cost less than £50 for everything, including the hose.

Thanks Stephen. Can you remember how long the hose was and did it have any preformed bends?

If it's dragging then there's a good chance the clutch is just worn out. How many miles has it done?

Some of the cars have an adjustable push-rod (the ones that weren't welded up!) which might eek out another few thousand miles if you extend it a bit. Also check it hasn't burst through the release arm, as that would drop the bite point quite a lot.

I have just done mine. I've gone for straight at the master cylinder and 90° at the slave and 98cm long. If your going land rover I think its 3/8 unf at the master and 7/16 at the slave.

It's worth changing even if you have to do the clutch.

Agreed about changing the whole thing. I got a Pirtek braided hose made up and they did a very good job, though cost about £60 and fitted the landrover parts both ends. The slave cylinder was an absolute pain to get to, but the last one looked to have lasted 25 years, so doubt I'll need to replace another!

Thanks for all the help guys. Great forum. All parts ordered. If it turns out to be the clutch at least i'll know the hydraulics are A! smile
