The instrument lights on my S2 have stopped working on the the intermediate setting. Does anyone know if the control mechanism is in the switch or is there a resistor lurking somewhere and if so where? Thanks. Andy.

Thanks Philpot. There are a couple of those in the transmission tunnel nearside adjacent to the bell housing. Always assumed they were ballast resistors for starting. Wii also have a look at the switch.

those resistors in the tunnel are rather exposed to water thrown up from the road
I replaced them with one 2.7 Ohm 50 watt resistor, which worked well, and relocated it from the bulkhead to next to the brake balance cylinder.
NB; it needs a heat sink and to be spaced away from the fibreglass as it gets hot. I used a piece of aluminium as a heatsink (just because that is what I had on hand) and used stacks of small washers as spacers to keep the heat sink away from the fibreglass.
I did this in 2013 and have had no problems with it since.

Time slides by doesn't it, and I am much taller now !! (I am sure this must be the reason why it is so much more effort to pick anything off the floor).

Order of probability (IMHO)

  • loose wire on the switch.
  • rusty connection one one side or other of the ballast resistor.
  • dodgy earth, somewhere.
  • knackered ballast resistor.
Given the original set up just gives you dim and glimmer, you could bypass the ballast resistor altogether you might get enough power to the bulbs (probably only 2W) to actually illuminate the instruments.

The only ones of those resistors I have seen that weren't well rusted were the ones I had just taken from the packet to fit.
