Good evening guys and gals

I’m after some advice on the best clutch to fit in my 1991 S3.

After developing a strange noise from the engine earlier in the year, I’ve ended up having the engine completely rebuilt. Whilst everything was out and accessible, I’ve also opted to have the gearbox rebuilt too, so might as well put a new clutch in. The old clutch is in really good condition (not sure how many miles it’s done) and is an original Motorcraft one. Not sure whether these are still available, so need to do some digging.

Should I stick with the Ford item, or has anyone got any other recommendations?

Thanks

Andy

Be surprised if a "genuine" Ford clutch still available for a car of that age (Capri 2.8) ?

Have you seen this old thread? ... clutch

I have no reason to doubt LUK clutches as in that link are fine for the job or Borg & Beck are a reputable brand ?

Mine is an S1 2.8i with a type 9 gearbox and I found this complete, 3 part clutch kit for it:

Clutch Kit LuK 624 0526 00 £40.80 1 £40.80
Shipping cost : £4.95
Total cost: £45.75

mister-auto.co.uk supplied it.

LUK are highly regarded and supply many of the clutches sold by other brand. I did some research before buying it and found a guy who said he had "LUK" stamped on his Borg & Beck pressure plate.

One caveat - it isn't fitted yet, but offering the parts up to those that came off they look identical.

Thank you both

Certainly worth further investigation. The clutch kits I’ve seen so far are north of £120, so need to do some further research read

So, just to be clear, it is a clutch for a 2.8 I’m looking for, even though my car is a 2.9 S3?

yes

Now, I'd spoken to Chris Gadd last year who had done his clutch in 2014/15 so knew to purchase the Ford 2.8 version, even for the 2.9 S3.
