Depends on the type of ball fitted. Pull the gaiter down and look at the base of the ball.

Look for an ali section with a sort of barb on it that the gaiter will register on. This is a locknut. Wrap some cloth or leather around it and grip it with a pipe wrench to undo it then the ball will unscrew.

Another type will again have an ali section below the ball but the lower edge of this will be radiused rather than barbed. This is a cover and again needs to be unscrewed to reveal 3 grub screws.

If there is nothing at the base of the ball then perhaps you're not trying hard enough.

It might be a small hex screw there somewhere, have you got the shifter out of your car?
If not do that and it will be easier to see on the lower part of the knob.
On my S it’s only twisted in place so nothing to fixate it.
