Are any fellow S-owners able to offer some pointers on electrics on an S1 please?

I am enjoying some happy hours spiralling down the rabbit hole of recommissioning an '88 S1 ..... one of the many jobs I have to attend to is parts of the wiring. An inspection of the fuse box has revealed that two of the fuses have clearly been getting hot - fuel pump and radiator fan from memory - and that has led to some minor scorching and melting of the fuse box and associated fuses. The fuel pump relay has clearly been hot too. I would like to rectify this, but I don't know what vehicle the fuse box was originally taken from - if indeed it was taken from something else.

Does anyone know what fusebox was originally used in the S1? and if replacements are available?

The alternative to replacing the fusebox is to rewire the scorched fuses with a more modern holder - or replace the fusebox with a more modern box. Any recommendations for that? either modern fuse holders that would suit those circuits or complete fuse boxes?

I suspect there'll be plenty of other issues identified as I dig further in but if anyone has any information to kick me off I'd appreciate the pointers.

The fuse box is modular click together thing, it's not donated from a mainstream manufacturer..............

This was my first attempt to improve things ....... clicky

But after having "burnt fuse" issues similar to yourself I replaced the whole thing with some similar click together fuse and relay holders found on Ebay.

Someone like Car Builder Solutions no doubt have something suitable?

Thanks for the reply. So the original fusebox was an aftermarket affair anyway - ok. Does anyone know if it was fitted / used in anything else? or anyone have an old one kicking around that they don't want? Perhaps I might be able to cannibalise another one to replace the cooked section in mine and add some mitigation to prevent it happening again...
I would prefer not to change the whole fuse box if I don't have to as the majority of it is absolutely fine and I'm trying to keep in mind the old 'don't fix what isn't broken' adage.

Also, a source for an alternative fuel pump relay? I have the pink Ford one fitted currently and it's been hot, so I'd like to replace with either another uprated one or a different solution. I see Durite do an alternative to the OE Ford relay - are the Durite relays any good?

Kicking around? ... yes.

Don't want? ... If I didn't want it I'd have thrown it away hehe

Possibly huge sums of money the price of a stamp could persuade me to part with one or two segments scratchchin

The below will solve your problem and are extremely cheap, the fuse holders click together and can be bonded in place of what you already have, the relay holders also click together side by side and you can bond 2 x 2 side by side holders together to duplicate what you already have

The pink Ford relays are getting as rare as rocking horse poo.

I found that a Pearl relay worked ok on my S1, Part No. FP 09 ( IIRC ! )
If they are still available. I had to hacksaw off the metal bracket attached to the body before it would plug into the relay base though.
It looks the same as the Durite one on an image search.

Alternatively you could try these guys:

Good luck. smile
