Driving today I suddenly lost high RPM power, and at the next stop heard a very loud noise. After checking the radio, fans etc.. it's the fuel pump.
I guess it's on it's way out. Each time I key on, the relay comes in and the noise starts.
It's a standard 1990 S3 V6, with no engine mods. It's got a new ally fuel tank and hoses in 2014, so should be fairly clear of gunk. The only out of the ordinary thing was filling up with standard unleaded instead of super-unleaded on Sunday.
Looking through the pumps available, they specify a fuel filter in the low pressure input hose - The only thing I have is a pressure suppressor.
So, is there any advantage selecting BOSCH over other manufacturers? Does anyone have the part numbers - the ones on the alternative list seem to be obsolete. Finally, do I need a filter in the low pressure pipe from the tank?
Thanks in advance - Richard.

If you have a new alloy tank, does that have a filter in it (as the original steel one did)? If not you really need a filter pre pump. It is pretty easy to get water into the fuel and alloy tanks are not necessarily corrosion free is there is ANY water or water vapour around (indeed they can corrode a lot faster than steel). Furthermore it is pretty easy to get a little muck in when filling. These pumps are very susceptible to damage. Getting a filter with the correct bore for the fuel pipe takes some care. Sytec make a very good one with a removable cartridge, available through Demon Tweeks, Burton Power of Car Builder Solutions but it isnt cheap!
