Been an idiot!

Right here goes, been dreading the stick im gonna get Nut and bolt rebuild of my 2.8 cologne engine on my S1. Put it back together, looks good, now the timing is out by 180 degrees. Back fired through the manifold .1, how did I manage to rebuild the engine and end up like it is now? 2, How do i fix it? is it as straight forward as lifting the dizzy off the oil pump shaft, rotating the rota arm back to the mark on the dizzy body and then replacing it. Back firing through the manifold was very disturbing, big bang, blue smoke and a weird smell Yep, in my shorts!! Come on lads, cant wait for the reply.

You can’t proof read a simple post on a forum, no eye for detail, so how could you rebuild an engine

You'll be fine pulling the dizzy out and turning around 180deg. I think I did the same when I had a 2.8i Capri. I think I may even have simply rotated the leads around. That is assuming (big assumption) that you have lined the fibre timing wheels up probably so the valves aren't getting too acquainted with the pistons.
If all ok mechanically then at Top Dead Centre the rotor arm just needs to be pointing a No1 plug lead. It's a very simple ignition system.

When setting the engine to top dead centre, in order to refit the distributor, it is important to ensure that number 1 cylinder is on the COMPRESSION STROKE. Do this by sticking your thumb over number 1 plug hole, the pressure will push against your thumb as the piston comes up. If it doesn't, you are on the exhaust stroke (exhaust valve open = no compression) and you will end up 180 out. In this case turn the crank another full 360 and you should be good to reinsert the distributor.

It is easily done (wonder how I know that!). Turn the engine to the correct position as described above. Pull the distributor back out. Put it back with the rotor arm about 120degrees anticlockwise from where the no1 lead will be, as the distributor goes down it will rotate the rotor arm so allow for that. You may experience a problem in that the distributor shaft does not easily connect with the pump shaft. There is a little sideways play in the pump shaft and you may have to try a few times before it will engage and let the distributor will go all the way down. Do yourself a favour and mark the crank pulley and the correct mark clearly with white paint. Remember, unless you have paid for special heads with inserts, the head will not be unleaded friendly and you should retard the ignition about 3degrees from original standard even if you are adding additive to the fuel.
