Strange rattle

Hello all
Firstly, apologies if you were at S Club Heaven today in Bywell and I’ve already asked you this, but my S3 (pre-cat) seems to have developed a strange rattle.
The car will start first time (as always) and sounds perfectly normal at idle. It also revs and drives perfectly well, but has started to make a strange rattling noise as the revs are dropping. It sounds like a chain catching on something and seems to be coming from the front near side of the engine.
My uninitiated and semi-informed (I’ve looked through the Haynes manual for the 2.9) view (guess) is that it could be the timing chain tensioner, but I’d welcome others thoughts (I appreciate it’s difficult without actually hearing it).
Are the chain tensioners prone to giving up the ghost? There seemed to be mixed views from the people I spoke to today - some said they are renowned for failing when others didn’t seem to think so.
Any help/ideas would be appreciated before I go spending my hard-earned on something I don’t need to.

As I started reading your post, I thought "chain tensioner". I had this on an old 2.9 Granada I owned 20 years ago, and it sounded exactly like that - changed the chain, tensioner and cam sprocket (the crank sprocket was too much of a PITA and I couldn't be bothered - still got that engine to 195K miles before I sold it!)
It didn't cost much (then), as I recall, and didn't take long to do, as long as you align the sprocket marks before you start, and don't turn them out of sync during the process.

I’ve seen the tensioners on the Burton Power website, but they don’t seem to have the sprockets and chains listed.
The only other I could find was this complete package on a well known auction site.
