KANGAROOING CAR
Discussion
Ok, another question from the novice. In low gear and quite low revs eg 2nd and 2000 car has a habit of violently kangarooing and juddering when tryig to maintain a low speed ie in traffic. I just thought that this was just a gearing problem or my crap driving. However this is now manifesting itself in other gears when not acclerating, but is not quite as pronounced.
Anyone got any ideas?

When it becomes non-intermittent on mine, it's going straight on a rolling road to find the cause. You might consider the same course of action.
The advice given currently is all good....There are a number of things that can cause this and they are listed below ....
1 - Inaccurate read form throttle Potentiometer
2 - Incorrect timing
3 - dirty/damaged HT leads
4 - Dirty dizzy cap
5 - Crud in fuel
6 - Fuel injection pulse is intermittent
The list goes on and on. I would suggest that you take it to a good rolling road and ask them to set it up describing the particular issues you have.
I have messed about with my engine more than I care to remember to get it to run right and ultimately the guys with RR's have sorted my problem quicker than me and you get the bonus of a car set up under loaded conditions.
Power Engineering does mine now.

Mine did this and it was the pipe from the plenum to the left hand (from the driver seats) rocker cover collapsing at revs above 2k ish. You could rev it from the engine bay and see the pipe collapse, the engine would struggle, revs would fall, the pipe would reshape, the engine would recover, pipe collapses, engine struggles... etc. Sparks plugs got fouled, engine over fueled and got itself in all sorts of trouble. One new pipe from ford routed so there are no sharp corners and a quick clean of the plugs and the problem just went and has never returned in over a year. Not obvious to diagnose at all.

Just gonna hijack Johno's though-train and vast experience for a minute
All of the above and more, I suppose

quote:this bears thinking about on mine... but is there history of these pots working intermittently? I suppose again, electrical cable break down is a possible factor here?
1 - Inaccurate read form throttle Potentiometer
quote:IME that doesn't fit with the behaviour mine was displaying.. but I've been wrong before.. if the timing is intermittently wrong, what's that all about?
2 - Incorrect timing
quote:well, Matt furnished me with a spare set so I can test that hypothesis fairly easily..
3 - dirty/damaged HT leads
quote:so then are we looking at the pump & filter or the ECU?
6 - Fuel injection pulse is intermittent

Was going to the area meeting tonight and the car was not idling properly, seem to hunt below 1000rpm and when driving seem to show a sign that I was taking my foot off the throttle. Was running perfect on Sunday.Idled so badly the alternator stopped charging at one point. The throttle pot which everyone seems to have problems with.Is this a part I can check/clean? and where is it?
OK an update on the kangarooing car, changed all sorts of things, HT leads new plugs with correct gaps!! hoses the car passed its MOT even first time with only minor tweeks. Earlier this week thought the car was running beautifully but now things seem to have taken a definite turn for the worse. I had been noticing a metallic zinging noise when accelarating and decellarating and just thought that it was a particular resonance on the car. However this evening car has got rougher and rougher, am now picking up huge resonance and vibration at speed from the rear and this evening definite and loud metallic tinkle from I think either the gearbox or drive shaft. I have no idea where to start with this, and if it is the drive shaft or UJs what the hell are these off and where can I get them???? This is critical as the car is my commuting car coz I work away during the week and I cannot leave wife and kids with a knackered two seater while i take the family car!! HEELP !!!!!!! Am getting close to consigning TVR to those who can afford to play. Car is F reg s1.5 with 2.9l V6
Metallic zinging sound?
Probably the exhaust. Is it stainless, (they tend to be more prone to this). Go to your local tyre garage, they can put it on the ramp and have a look for you. I had this with my S2 once, and Hi-Q welded my split stainless silencer for a mere £15!
Jas.
P.S. Mrs Paceracing's MX-5 stainless steel exhaust has just started doing it as well, so it isn't just a TVR problem!

Mine does this from about 4k-5k rpm and depends on engine speed rather than road speed... change gear and it should go away, therefore not prop or diff. I took it all apart to do my gearbox and clutch and had a good look around the exhaust at the same time so I know they're ok and I know my prop shaft is ok.
Since I put it back on it's been the same and I've put it down to one of the baffles come loose inside the exhaust and is buzzing. It's a bit annoying but not overly so and I'm not going to worry about it until it actually falls off.

Mark
Edited to add - you'll probably find that the noise gets worse into a journey as the exhaust heats up... mine does (sounds like there's ball bearings in there when really hot).
