All,

After ignoring the issue for the last 15 years I finally decided this winter to tackle the dodgy passenger door hinges on my S3. Remarkably, after taking my time and with copious amounts of plusgas, I managed to undo the bolts without destroying the brass bobbins that are glassed into the body. I fitted the new bolts and ‘top hat’ bushes that I bought 10 years ago and put the door back. It all lines up beautifully along the front, rear and bottom edges of the door and swings open and closed with no nasty grinding noises.

However, I do have a slight issue. With the door correctly aligned the metal quarter light frame is a very tight fit against the windscreen frame. When you close the door the frame flexes out about 5-10mm. To be honest, it actually makes a nice weather proof seal but I fear the constant flexing may shatter the window over time.

So, my question is, does anyone know if there is any adjustment in the frame. Ideally I would like to leave the door as is but have the frame ‘lean out’ at the top by approx. 5mm. I also note that the window glass appears a little closer to the inner door skin than the driver’s side. Is there a way to adjust the window and frame so that it all moves about 5mm towards the outer door skin.

I have had a good look and can’t really see a way to adjust it. The frame at the front is screwed to the door at its mid-point with 4 screws and this all looks to have gone back to its old position. The rear window frame is fixed with screws in one position. I suspect it has always been like this but because the top hinge had quite a lot of slack it wasn’t noticeable.

Any ideas re adjustment gratefully received.

The front window runner, or quarter light frame is secured to the bottom of the door (you'd have found this when you did the hinges) , on mine the hole was far larger than the bolt, this should give you some adjustment to pull the bottom in this moving the top out?
Is the glass reasonably central in the little rubber block at the handle end of the door?

Thanks, I had forgotten about the hole where the frame bolts to the hinge. I'll give that a go tonight.

The rear of the window is centered correctly so I think the problem lies in the quarterlight frame.

Failing that, it's a bit of very gentle bending wink

I'm thinking about dismantling the door on my S and refitting everything (especially the hinges, and sorting the slow window motor). If/when I get round to doing so, what's the best adhesive to re-attach the various rubber trim strips ? I had a mercury silver S2 many years ago which had a tendency to loose bits of rubber trim, I used EvoStik (and suffice to say it wasn't too successful). BTW does anyone out there still have that car ?
