Nice Rack

Hi, I have some play in the centre position on my steering rack. Has anyone sucessfully tightened their's by adjusting the shims, or purchased a new/recon rack. Where to buy and how much?

If the play is only in the centre then adjusting the shims will probably make it overtight off-centre.

I've re-shimmed the rack once but the play was not localised.

You could try dismantling the rack and rotate the input gear half a turn and see what the play is like then?

Shims...!! What shims..

I re-conned mine a few months ago, I don't recall there being any shims which you can adjust.

There is the main shaft from the steering column, which is attached to a worm gear in the main rack housing. The main steering rack bar has a straight gear hobbed into it where the worm gear actuates.
This drives the main bar left to right.

The worm gear is supported at the top by the main housing and the bottom by a replacable bearing (any good bearing supplier should have one.) This may be worn....(typical)

The Main steering rack bar is held in the rack housing centrally by a nylon bearing ( mine was worn, failed MOT so I replaced it..)

The main rack housing is filled(or should be) with grease......

Thanks Dave, I was assuming there were shims to push the pinion onto teh rack, under the little cover. If teh rack gear form is worn, I would expect a new rack gear is the only way?

I had 2 under one cover and 3 under the other.

No shims seems strange?

Aha... there is...

The rack is pushed onto the pinion though. There is a cover on the rear of the main body 2 screws. The cover reveals a sprung pusher which forces the rack bar to mesh with the worm. Its a Nylon pusher with a cut away acting as a bearing surface on the rack rear.



Maybe wear or a broken spring..?


A recon rack is available from Tower View for £90 IIRC this an exchange as well, so you or they have to remove it...

You guys seem to be experts!!! My steering is very notchy. When you turn the steering wheel its tight, then loose, then tight etc, but put it down to the UJ's. Just worried slightly because the MOT's due, otherwise its just part of the cars charm.

Mine also exhibited the same symptoms.. Caused by a rusty shaft...
