Budget Power upgrades..
Discussion
Hi all..
Well going on Johno's diagnosis I need a new gearbox.. Rivergirl could hear my shifting over both our engines the other day, and things have got worse from there.
So assuming the obvious, its engine out, heads off (if nothing else so the bolt holes for the manifolds can inevetably be helicoiled), gearbox out and re-con box sourced.
From there I might as well have the valves lapped and the ports polished a bit, however I'm wondering a) how much will all this cost.. and b) is it worth doing something else instead like a different engine (cosworth?).
Considering I don't have a pile of cash, but know a few people who could track down some major parts are there any suggestions, or just tell me how good my existing engine is and I'll be happy
Cheers,
Matt.
PS. anyone got a recon gearbox ?

quote:Rather than buy a whole gearbox, why not have yours recon'd by an expert? I took mine into Newbury Transmissions and rather than needing a new box all I needed was a synchro hub, some new bearings and new seals which cost me roughly 200. If I had of needed a complete recon job then the quote would be about 350 which was the cost of a recon gearbox anyway and at least you know the recon gearbox you get will be your old one so will fit and all the speedo stuff will work.

Just a thought,

While my heads were off I sent them to Ferriday Engineering, they did 3 angle valve seats, new valve guides, core plugs, skimmed and all cleaned it cost around £250 inc postage. It made a bit of a difference but I soon got used to it, he will also port the heads if you require but he did say there are no wonders to be had with them I and would have to change the cam to get much benefit from this.

That was yours at Zolder wasn't it Paul? I remembering thinking that it went faster than the typical V6.

I have tracked down a company to do this for me so thanks for the thoughts, their promotional blurb says:
"Road Rally and Race Car preparation"
"Cylinder Head & Engine Modifications"
"General Servicing and Repairs"
..so I'm sure can advise on other bits and bobs.
They also tend to have a 440bhp 1965 Griffith 400 knocking about the workshop
Cheers
Matt.
