Got the old girl started.

Well, the S has been in the garage without starting now since last autumn and been in bits. I turned the engine over with no plugs or electrics to get the oil pressure up, then fitted a new coil and plugs. Would it start? Yes first time, no problem at all. Still got the slight dip on the throttle when you touch it. Soon as you go a bit further its ok. Before you start on pots, its new. Even changed the wires to the gold contacts with the parts, it still does it!
Its always done this, and someone said it could be running to rich. Can this all be sorted by a tune up?
The trouble is I've now got to turn it round and start on its arse! mind you I might just sneak out round the block for a quick spin, just to check its all ok! you just have to don't you?

Thanks chaps for the replies. Couple of things I need to clear up.
As mine is the 2.9 there is no vacuum advance.
the fuel regulator has a pipe coming off the end (drivers side) which appears to hang loose down by the engine. I have found a spare open tube sticking out under the throttle body (about 5-6mil) which is not plugged. I presume the regulator hose should go on here. There is also a plugged pipe next to it, I just wondered what this was for.
The Ford book says that there are four vacuum conections on the engine. As I am assuming that my engine miss when touching the throttle could be a vacuum problem I want to make sure that I don't miss a hole somewhere. The Ford book says the four conections are.
VACUUM HOSES. Fuel pressure regulator. Plenum chamber. throttle valve. Hose conected to a T piece.
The bible tends not to cover this area in any detail and I would like to know all this for certain. So please get those bonnets up on your 2.9s and let me know.

No vac advance? How strange! One thing to bear in mind if you're looking for missing/disconnected pipes: the breather, brake servo and fuel pressure regulator tappings would be simple vac taps to the manifold pressure, but the vac advance would normally be a throttle edge tapping (fresh air side at idle, vacuum side the rest of the time). If these were mixed up you could get all sorts of strange results (including overfuelling at tickover, and no brake servo!). So don't assume that hose A plugs in to pipe B just because they are near by and the right size.
Now Look here LEEBEE, what have you done to your distributor. you would have to be different, what the hell have you done now then.
I am awaiting with desire to know how you engine is running, no doubt with other 2.9 victims ready and willing to go where no 2.9 has gone before.
I'll renew the brake servo pipe as suggested, as this is the last place that can leak air as far as I can see.

Glad to hear its running again...the hose you speak of from the pressure regulator does indeed plug onto where you described.

Come on LEEBEE, No distributer. what the hell have you done now! we are all dying to know what you have substituted it for, radio waves, fly by wire F15 system could be worth trying.
I've had the throttle plate off and cleaned it all. the butterfly's close up but leave a small gap at the top and bottom. Is this right?
Also the right hand side butterfly has a hole in it about 5-6 mil drilled through. Is this right? can't find anthing in the bible concerning a set up for these.
I've checked all the vac hoses for leaks and all seem ok.

Yes this is correct. The Aux Air valve will compensate and control additonal airflow.

The hole on the butterfly is part of the set up at idle and assists the Aux Air Valve to get the necessary emmissions. I do know one guy who has blocked this and achieved the requirements through set up. I personally have left mine as it is.

I would suggest what you are suggestion is a very accurate suggestion. Answer therefor is yes I would suggest so. Thats why you want to get rid of it

Leebee has development Cosworth engine sitting in his garage at the moment and will be making further referrals lightly covered by technical jargon concerning this until the day he gets it into the car. Hurry up Lee I want a lift in it...

Yes Johno's sussed it (and a few others who read all the posts on this site!) it's the quad cam 24 valve Cosworth V6, looking at boring it out to 3.7L and fitting throttle bodies,Cams, mapable ECU and a carbon plenem, then later on a supercharger.I managed to get a lot of spares with the engine so if anyone needs a brand new 2.9 crank and block then give me a shout (might be good to get it bored out without having to immobilise the car whilst it is at the engine builders etc).Will keep you all posted!
