Yet another gearbox related question

What oil do people recommend for the type-n gearbox (S3, 2.9l). The chap who reconditioned mine nodded approvingly at the fact mine had red oil in it... whatever that means. I've been trying to match up the numbers in the bible and the book of lies (haynes) to bottles in halfords are rapidly getting nowhere. Can anyone shed any light on this and even better give me a make and type of oil to put in?

Thanks again,

Mark

PS. I have 2 bottles of very expensive red QX auto gearbox oil... what's the difference between automatic gearbox oil and manual gearbox oil (I bought for the PAS on my mondeo).

The red gearbox oil is the correct stuff. It's called ATF fluid, which I think means Automatic Transmission Fluid. I by mine from the Ford parts department, so I have no idea what the equivalent 'Halfords' stuff is as I have never used it.
