S2 Thermostat query
Discussion
Can you tell me where the water thermostat is on a 2.9 Cologne engined S2 1990 please? My Ford dealer reckoned it wasn't where it should be. Can they be fitted by a bloke like me of limited mechanical ability or best left to who? Can anybody recommend a good independent workshop in the North Staffordshire/South Cheshire region? Thanks.
From memory, looking at the front of the car, it's top right just above the water pump. It's easy to fit assuming the bolts come out of the head with snapping.
I think you undo the bolts on the housing, withdraw the housing, replace the thermostat (assuming you have one, mine didn't), put a new gasket on and do the bolts up the appropriate torque.
...at least I think I'm remembering the correct car I've done this on

The thermostat is located in the inlet manifold at the front of the engine underneath the throttle assembly area.
CAUTION !
The bolts into the cover are notorious for shearing off. Be very careful when attempting to undo them and ease them as much as possible. If they do shear they tend to shear right the head and they are not threaded in the cover so it easy to remove them from the manifold if they do shear.
When torquing them back up remember to do it to spec. They are a low torque setting and if you do them too tight you will have the same problem as described above.

Ummm. Thank you for your replies. Seems I could easily get myself into a bit of bother if the bolts shear. I can just see it..Murphy running full tilt towards me. You make me wonder tho' if i do indeed have a thermostat. It takes 4-5 miles to come to temperature and then sits there with the fan cutting in and out. Why would somebody want to remove the thing?
Their mate's best friend's sister whose ex husband's cousin used to work in the corner shop opposite the place where they used to make something that they used on a Ford in 1923 said:
1. You don't want a thermostat cos all those race cars don't use them cos it absorbs power. And you want some more power don't you...
2. The only reason you need to chcek the cooling is cos of the thermostat. Take it out and it will never fail. Obvious 'nnit.
3. Joe's Arches workshop took it out cos another one of their cars needed a new one...
4. It improves the cooling and stops the car from overheating.
5. It raises the temperature so the car runs hotter and that gives more power.
6. My mate did it to his XR3i and it now goes faster than them new Tuskins.
I could go on.....
