Newbie questions
Discussion
Hello all.
It's great to be back in TVR ownership with a 1991 S3C, a year after selling our Wedge.
I've a few newbie questions...probably the first of many...
The front indicator lenses could do with being replaced. Can someone tell me what they are off?
Is it a big job to get the dashboard out so I can replace the cracked 'wood veneer'?
Is there somewhere I can get a replacement bulkhead steering bearing?
More to follow, no doubt...
Thanks in advance,
Andy

The front indicator lenses (often cracked as they stick out from the front of the car) are from a Leyland Sherpa van:
Leyland Daf Part No. BAU 2249

BUT, they went out of production many years ago, although some occasionally turn up for silly money.
Alternatively, there are some copies around and also some others can be adapted to fit (BMW E30, Nissan Terrano, mid-1990s Kia Pride). Search the S Series forum for more information.

Nice car Andy...welcome to the team...
They are great to work on and deal with any issue, apart from indicator lenses and dash removal!!!!
Remade lenes are available, but ones without the lip, such as Kia pride are much cheaper and less prone to the stress cracking than happens in the originals - your choice...
I have managed to avoid removing my dash in the last 5 or 6 years as I don't have a midget friend with steel hands...but it can be done - try Google'ing and you should get one of the earlier posts in this issue from the S forum...

Play around on the "search", shed loads been posted on both subjects in the past Is there somewhere I can get a replacement bulkhead steering bearing?

As said genuine old stock front indicators or very good copies do appear on Ebay or in the PH classifieds occaisionally, £50 -£60 pounds each seems to be about the going rate and considering they'd probably be about half that anyway if still available from Leyland DAF I don't think that's too bad!
Assuming you still have the original plastic bush, I would get the whole lot replaced. It has transformed the steering on my car. I recently replaced mine on an red S3 V6 must like yours, using the kit from ML Performance Parts. I know I could have got the bits cheaper by shopping around and getting the essential items from engineering suppliers, but getting the complete kit is just easier.
Very easy to do. I followed the guide. Some words of advice though from my experience.
The finishing on the fibreglass of the bulkhead was very un-even, making it difficult to correctly line up the metal bearing housing. The old plastic one had just deformed to match the profile of the fibreglass.
The blots supplied by MLP stripped the treads with very little force.
The holes on the bulkhead did not line up perfectly, and needed to be enlarged very slightly to get the housing to fit.
Get yourself some bigger penny / panel washers to use against the fibreglass.
Make a note of the position of the steering wheel, and universal joints if you do not want to have to take everything apart and do it again.
I had to rewire the ignition as a few of the wires decided that they did not like being moved and detached themselves from the ignition barrel and from the spade connectors.
Original or copies of of the original indicators are as rare as hens teeth, but do occasionally appear on Ebay. Just found these at RaceTech which is about the same sort of price that the original units sell for, if not a little cheaper.

Whilst on the subject of slightly vague steering, I also experienced this on the Eurotour. Aswell as the bearing kits (thanks for the link!), can somebody please point me in the direction of replacement UJ's (am I right there is an upper and lower?). Paul (Oldred) mentioned whilst we were aware that some UJ's out there were inferior in quality to others so I am keen to make sure I get the best available.
Also, best place to send the steering rack for a recondition? I am not sure whether all of this will be needed or not - how have others approached it?

Have a read of this...
top joint
bottom joint
alternative
These worked for me, I am happy with the quality, others have had longer joints and shorter shafts or even top joint welded to the shaft.
I make Suggestions not recommendations !!!!!

MLP appear to offer the top and bottom joint on their site. Might be worth a call to ask them.
My car felt just like the rack was the issue as the car would wander on country lanes, but replacing the bulkhead bearing has solved the problem completely.
There are spacers that can be removed on the rack to tighten it up. http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a.... I did this before realising the bulkhead bearing had some play in it. The spacers are very thin and make a massive difference. Removing a spacer tightens the rack up.

Nice car Andy!
It somehow looks vaguely familiar....
It was good to see you on Sunday and you are right, S owners are a very friendly and helpful bunch.
I will still look on the forum even though I have defected to the "Dark Side" and bought a Chimaera.
First £240 spent on an exchange wiper motor! Who said TVR's were made from other cars parts? The Chimaera wiper motor turns out to be a specific part...
Anyway, to answer your questions, there maybe some parts going on ebay very shortly that you may be interested in.....
You have my number!
Kind regards, Chris.

hi. i am the one i believe who's doing the front indicator lenses since old daf/leyland stocks have dried up since ages. just put an ad on ebay explaining the high price, but obtained directly from me they are cheaper. still not for grabs though, because manufacturing of these exact replicas costs a fortune as well.
it is not just the lenses, but the complete housings plus lenses (no wiring loom though).
please send a message pm if you are still interested.
oh yes: i have them in amber and also in clear transparent.
cheers, geert van hout, scimitar & tvr centre

Obviously they do not look original as per the others and so you need to decide what you wanted.
At less than a tenner per for a pair, I want for Kia Pride...plus without the lip that must have saved weight too...only problem the car's re-sale value has go down by about 120 quid! ...
