Recently went over a sleeping policeman which seem to be down every f***ing road in my area. I now have a very loud knocking noise coming from the sump area of my TVR S2 every time I start the car. Please Can anybody tell me what this might be, as the car was running perfectly before the run in with the sleeping policeman.

regards Philip

Probably the exhaust banging on the sump. Be careful of which way the U clips on your exhaust are facing or it could puncture the sump.

Phil,

Is it just when you start the car, or while you are driving / cornering as well.

The exhaust sounds likely, but I would check engine and gearbox mounts as well in case they've been disturbed. I had a similar noise years ago caused by a knackered mount.

Cheers,
JSG.

Sounds very similar to mine - the exhaust was removed and remounted by me to allow access to gearbox. The exhaust now runs too close to the chassis cross rail immediately behind the sump and I get an occasional knocking noise when cold, which disappears once the exhaust warms up a bit.

Solution - undo the exhaust mounts under the middle of the car and tweak them (bend them a bit) and then refit the system.
